Hi
My jcw s is makeing a tapping noise on start up sounds like tappets, it use to do it every now and again on a cold day, but its got worse, i have given it oil changes with 0w30 oil and lifter oil as well over the last few years but its seams to have got worse! is there any known problems with them? or strainers part blocking etc! it dose shut up but when it gets up to temp, and its only done 59k its a 2003 s with jcw kit on it!
befor i start spending money on tappets and stripping engine is there anything known?
[quote=MrLoz;3851249]It might be the timing chain or timing chain tensioner system. Fuel injectors can also make a ticking sound but that sound I think stays constant.
It dose not sound like chain as soon as it gets up to temp it stops, it must be oil related. doing my head in now
Mine makes a similar noise on start up. I noticed it when I bought the car (R53, 45k on clock) and I have monitored it over the past few weeks, icy weather, damp, mild... and it seems to be getting better?!!!
I think it is a noisy tappet - mechanic friend thinks the same. Im just wondering if it was a bit rattly because the car never really got used much? It does it occasionally but lasts a few seconds to a few minutes....
ya same as mine, yesterday it fired up after going to the shops so up to temp etc with a slight missfirre and loud tapping! no oil light and afred picking up the revs to 3k or more then it stopped instantly and was fine!
my mini dosen do many miles but when we use it it dosent get wimped around and do go on good runs up motorways etc, but then other days it starts op perfect with no noise at all!
Get a long screw driver and put the handle end to your ear and the other end on the rocker cover in different places to dictate which set of rockers that is making the noise.
no not all the time but drove it to work today and started this morning fine no noise or misfire but then getting back to it after work and it was misfiring and loud tapping then it shut up and then got loud again with no misfire when driving! i think one or more of the hdt have broken up so going to fit some new ones and see how i go,
i have also spoke to auto logic to see if they have any known problem and they say chain tensioners some times play up but thats about it!
i have fixed it, did a oil change with castrol 0w40 i know it should be 0w30 but a friend owns a ford dealership and has 0w40 for the new rs focus on tap and its not £15 per ltr like bmw, and its fine now! still with 4k on the service indicator, also put some new plugs in it after just to make shore,
