Mini Cooper S 2003 - Software upgrade

Hi, I have been told today after my car having a diagnostic check for loss of power code P1688 possible by pass valve, that I should upgrade my software. I have been quoted £100.00 is this about right or is this price way too high, also is it essential that I have the upgrade or is this just a sales ploy to get more money out of me. Is it recommended as I am not sure I can afford both the replacing of the by pass valve and the upgrade, however if it is essential then I will try and find the money and go for it.

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks
Nick

Nick, I'd go for the replacement bypass valve and leave the software for another time / another dealer. 100 pounds sounds a bit rich to me! I'd also be asking the dealer to KEEP your old bypass valve just in case that doesn't solve your power problems. They can then put the old one back in and refund you the cost, since they have failed to correctly diagnose the problem.
