Unhappy Strange noise while driving

Hello All,

I have a problem with my 05 Mini Copper Convertable; when driving I get a noise which sounds like "shhhick shhhick shhhick" coming from the nearside (left) of the car. It almost sounds like a plastic bag wrapped round the driveshaft.
The noise is road speed dependant, doesn't change when cornering or brakeing, acellerating or decellerating. I have checked for foreign objects such as stones and sticks stuck in the tyre, behind the discs and between the pad and the disc.
With the front off the ground there is a slight clattering, mechanical sound when I turn the left wheel but it doesn't feel rough or resitant to turning.
I have also checked for stones in tyres, both front and back, and leaks from CV joints (there are no leaks).
Typically I cancelled the extended warentee yesterday..... but at around 100,000 miles not much was covered any more anyway.

Ideas?

Thanks
