Is Temperature Gauge OK?

Advice Please.
Before I ring my dealer
I have noticed on start-up and for about half a mile the temperature gauge rises, to half way between normal and hot, then settles at the normal.

(Weather has been near freezing lately) could be something to do with the thermostat opening.

Has anybody else experienced this?

I think I would get this checked out. Usually, at least as far as I know, the valve from the engine to the radiator is opened by the same sensor that gives you the engine temp on the dash. Your mini might actually be overheating, and then cooling down to normal. But then again, it might just be the gauge.

I would get it checked out, better safe than sorry.

Yeah, I think Apex may be right. Mine comes up slow and steady to the halfway mark, and stays there. Possibly a sticking thermostat. Take her in for a check.

The coolant thermostat (as in pretty much all cars) is a completely mechanical device and is not controlled by any type of sensor. It is a thermostatic device that is totally controlled by the temperature of the coolant.

That said, you should certainly get it checked out. Perhaps the thermostat is sticking and is not opening on time, or perhaps you just have a faulty gauge or sensor.

The thermostat is located in the cylinder head and is retained in a plastic housing located at right side
of the engine (viewed from the front of the car).
The thermostat begins to open at 89-92 °C and is
fully open at 103 °C. The thermostat housing also incorporates the cooling system pressure cap on a
MINI ONE and MINI COOPER.
The engine temp guage is also damped..The needle will remain in the straight up(12o'clock position)when the cooling systems is between 76 °C and 112 °C.
So any temp change above 112 °C and the guage goes into the red, and any temp below 76 °C and it shows cold..

Yeah, thats what I meant..You just said it more accurately.

except it stayed at about 3/4. Dealer says it is a faulty gauge.
