Different Wiper Intermittent Problem?

Hi all

Newbie here so apologies if I have not used the search properly but couldn't find this problem!

My windscreen wipers seem to have a mind of their own and will intermittently start working (very slowly) without switching them on (and the stalk seems to have no effect on them). They sometimes stop on their own in a random position, sometimes they will go back to normal if I do a wash wipe. I have also noticed that the fast speed does not seem to work - just the same speed as the normal wipe speed. The light on the end of the stalk flashes when you start the car.

I have taken it to a garage who have checked the electrics and say they are ok (including the earth which I have seen mentioned as a problem on these cars). They are recommending a new Body Control Unit but I just wanted to check before spending out quite a lot of money!!

Don't know if it's connected but sometimes when the ignition is switched on, the speedo clock unit goes mad and makes a ticking noise for a moment before returning to normal.

Car is a 2005 Mini One 1.6 petrol with 32k miles.

Any help/advice would be very much appreciated and apologies again if I have not used the search properly to find an answer!
