Question 55 plate R52 cooper S - Should I buy? (ps pump)

Hi all,

I am very interested in purchasing a 55 plate (September 2005) Mini Cooper S (r52, I believe?) which drives nicely. First thing I noticed was the steering which is heavier than other small cars I've driven, which prompted me to look on forums, and then found all the issues with steering pumps between 05-07 cars.

I did find an unofficial source that said they started using a different part after Feb 2005 - Can anyone confirm this, or have any more info as to wether the 55 plate car would be affected? The safety aspect of it failing whilst driving along does worry me and is putting me off buying the otherwise lovely car!

I've asked BMW Mini themselves and they can not seem to verify exactly which cars would be affected, and normal servicing apparently wouldn't pick this up as they were never officially re-called.

An upgraded pump was fitted to cars built February 10, 2005 onward.

Plate number is meaningless ... you need to know the build date.

This is true! The car was registered in Sep 2005, but it could have been built up to 6 months ago I'd guess? So will hopefully be fine.
