new member - a few little issues!

Hello all!

My girlfriend bought herself a 52 plate r53 cooper S earlier on today, and it has a few niggles I wish to sort out.

firstly, the passenger seat recliner mechanism seems to be broken.
I have done a lot of searching on the internet this evening, and although there is a common issue with the seat recliners on these early models, I dont know if this is the same issue.
Basically, the seat back will not stay upright. The inboard tilt handle seems to have no effect, and the back of the seat is down in a 3/4 reclined position. You can grab the seat back and pull it upright easily, but it will not latch in any position, and the handle does not seem to be attached to anything as it does not click etc etc.
Has anybody else had this issue?

niggle 2:
The exhaust is very quiet and sounds standard, although it has a large oval shaped tip (much like a standard Fabia VRS). Is there an aftermarket backbox that has a tip like this, or could it be that somebody has just replaced the tip? It annoys me as I think it looks awful, and it does not sit central!

Finally, it is very stiff to get into gear. Are the clutches cable or hydraulic, and can they be adjusted? Could it be the linkages causing the difficulty getting it into gear or is it more likely to be the clutch needs changing?

Hopefully somebody knowledgeable will be able to help us out.

Rear exhaust sounds like it is aftermarket but it may just be the tips changed, are there still 2 large exhaust boxes under the boot floor, one each side?

The clutch is hydraulic (see video below), there may be air in the system or the slave cylinder might be failing, could also be linkage on top of gearbox or the selector cables from the gearlever need lubricating/replacing. Worth checking these first as all are cheaper and easier to sort than clutch.

6-speed S Getrag gearbox itself is pretty bullet proof.

thanks for the reply, was very helpful!

i had a look at the seat, but wasnt sure, are you supposed to sit in the back and try to slam it forwards, or sit in the front and try to slam it back? either way it didnt seem to do too much, maybe i wasnt trying hard enough, will give it another look at the weekend.

i have had the time to have a look at the exhaust, it does have a box either side, although it is stainless and looks aftermarket. i will probably end up taking it to a local exhaust centre to get the tips changed as the single oval looks awful!
it is also blowing from the centre very badly so will need to look into this too.

also i had a drive of the mini last night, i think it is the linkages as the clutch doesnt slip or judder or crunch. will look into lubricating the linkages.

I've used the seat fix you have mentioned but I had the seat out when I did it. I just sat in the seat pulled the recline leaver (even if it doesn't feel like its doing anything) then got my mate to sit up by the headrest then give a few jumps and it clicked back and worked fine. The way that was suggested to me after removing the seat was sit in the seat put your feet up on the a pillars (I would recommend removing the covers don't want to damage them) and push hard whilst pulling the leaver and will click back into place
