Key fob not unlocking/locking doors but also starting car

Hi folks, a MINI newbie here, please be gentle. Car is a 2002 MINI One with regular looking Valeo 2 button (lock/unlock) bladed key.
Car came with: 1 x brand new key recently from BMW which works fine.
1 x older key which is not remotely unlocking/locking car (works manually in the door locks) - This same key also turns in the ignition lock and instrument panel to illuminate but will not start car (immobiliser)? -
Now this older key (I only say older as he casing looks a bit worn compared to the brand new key) looks in good shape, I've fitted a new battery and the micro switches on the key PCB illuminate the red bulb when pressed - however apart from manually opening the doors it's useless. Is there anything I can do with the key to pair it up to get it to work, all I am aiming for at this stage is to get it to start the car, opening/unlocking remotely would be great but not critical. I wish to keep it as a spare so that in an emergency I may at least be able to start the car.

I've noticed lots of posts on here & the internet of MINI keys needing a re-code for the remote to unlock/lock but this does not even start the car.

Many thanks Pete
