Weird problem - supercharger keeps blowing

My 2002 Cooper S (CR/W) yesterday began acting strangely - when I stopped the car and turned off the engine the supercharger blower kept blowing, sounding like a vacuum cleaner as I got out of the car. It lasted 4 or 5 minutes and finally quit. It's done this about 4 times now. I've thought I might need to disconnect the battery to make it quit, but it's always stopped on its own. Each time it's been raining or very humid. Has anyone else experienced this, or have any ideas about what what might be going on? Thanks for any help.

How can the SC keep going if the engine isn't?

You sure it isn't the rad. fan running? Was the engine hot when it did it?

The supercharger is run off a the engine by a belt. If the engine stops the supercharger stops.

What you are hearing is the thermostaticly controlled electric radiator fan that does run a few minutes after the engine is stopped, particularly on a hot day.

We were on a Mini run the other week. four cars drove up the same road at the same speed. All stopped at the same time. Only one of them turned the fan on a couple of minutes after we stopped.

We did the same thing a week later, and a differnt car had its fan turn on.

BTW, they were both hot days. Who cares, I say

It is the rad fan. It's very noisy and does indeed sound like a (bad) vaccuum cleaner. Mine blows all the time, a bit to much for my liking, so I'm gonna have it checked with my dealer. It's even doing it in winter. Anyone else who has the same problem?

It's not unusual for cars' fans to run for a while after being turned off, but not for more than a minute or two, typically. On VWs they often turn themselves on after a few minutes of the car being turned off, run for a minute or so and then turn back off. Interesting, but not dangerous.

If it's more than that, it may be a bad coolant temp sensor.

i've had that happen twice after a month of having my Cooper S
once was a very hot day (like 35C or so)
another day was at nite, which wasn't too hot, but i think around 30C or so.
i guess its pretty normal for it doing that.
after a few minutres it turned itself off.
people who duno might think that u got a turbo timer or something???

The fan running has nothing to do with the ambient temp, per se...remember, the enging is still 180+ degrees F. Just because it's cold outside doesn't keep the radiator fan from running, especially if you're sitting still.

Agree.

It s winter in the UK, but this week I discovered a new route to work, a much faster route and hey presto when I stop the fan comes on!!! I guess because I worked the engine harder!
