Helicopter sound coming from rear?

I have 2002 mini cooper s, I have been hearing the helicopter take off sound for a while now, it's only when I get up to a high speed at 60 or 70 mph, I thought it could be a gearbox problem but when I'm driving I put in nuetral the helicopter sound is still there. Anyone know the problem rather not go to dealer!!!

Check your rear tyres for damage or irregular wear, after that it could be a wheel/tyre balance issue. Could also be a worn wheel bearing, is it worse/louder when taking a corner?

The sound is in the rear so when I turn it sounds the same I checked the wheel to see if it was loose to see if the wheel/hub bearing was bad but was perfectly fine and no real odd wearin my tires either.

Could be a buckled wheel can you feel any vibration when its making the noise although what big nige said sounds more likely. Normally if a rear wheel bearing is on its way out it gets louder when you go round corners thats what big nige meant, as the weight shifts you hear it more

Maybe worth checking to ensure you haven't got loose body parts eg: bumper / trim / rear number plate / number plate cover / mudflaps (if fitted) / muffler heatshield or even the plastic rear wheel liner etc - or something that is flapping around from air pressure when you get some speed up?

Crawl underneath and give them all a wiggle by hand & check all is secure.

Has the car been stood a while for any amount of time? Tyres do easily flat spot within a short space of time.

Get the car to a tyre fitters and have them balance the rear wheels, it's quite an inexpensive exercise.

I have something similar and have traced it to the plastic wheel arch liner not fitted properly and is catching the outside edge of the tyre when cornering. Its the off side rear so is only noticeable with a rear passenger and going round left handers.
