Clutch 2005 Mini Cooper S

Hi all, new member with a major problem.....

So 48 hours ago I noticed a noise on my Mini Cooper S (05) when idling. It was a rattling noise that disappeared when the clutch pedal was depressed, and came back when the pedal was released. It’s not something I’d noticed before but a friend was walking past I told him about and he suspected the clutch release bearing? There was no problem selecting any gears or driving. so carried on with a view to getting it looked at this weekend?

The noise went away for a couple of days. This morning after about 2 miles the clutch felt notchy and when I pulled into work it felt like the car was going to stall over some speedbumps. As I reversed into the parking space there was a squeal and the rattle returned, but much louder. I moved forward and back in the parking space, and the clutch was very notchy but then the clutch pedal stayed down and I couldn’t engage any gears or move the car. There was also a slight smell of burning, a bit like the smell of clutch burn out, but more melting plastic than anything so I turned it off straight away.

The car has done 66.5K, I think it has the 6 Speed Getrag gearbox. It was a private purchase 1000 miles and 3 months ago!

So here is my thought process going from bad to worse. Opinions welcome and invited please.

Clutch Mechanism - Is the clutch hydraulic or cable operated and I've just suffered a failure here.

Clutch Release Bearing - It's this that's gone, which might explain the rattle but can this just be replaced on it's own.

Clutch Gone - Whole new clutch required and hopefully the gearbox is unnaffected.

New Clutch, Gearbox and Flywheel. - The whole shebang is fubarred??

Hi ya

1) hyd clutch not cable
2) if you replace the bearing replace the guide tube as well
3) clutch plate and diaphragm you can get a aftermarket or original lots of options out ther velo or luk or you can go for a performance one depending on your budget and application.
When it's apart check your flywheel they do have problems that might be your rattling the dual mass tend to get abit noisy as they get older.
People like velo do a clutch and flywheel kit
4) secondhand gear box from mini mat or bm spares

But tbh until you get it apart you are not going to know.
I would say from what you describe it does sounds like bearing or diaphragm for shore but while it's in bits do the clutch as well, just saves you going back in thee again.

Thanks Marque. I've found in Coventry and spoken to John. He's on holiday but has said he may be able to look at it next week. He comes highly recommended by the looks of it if this forum is anything to go by.

Just trying to gauge if anyone else had the same and what they ended up getting fixed. Agreed we won't know for sure until it's out, but I don't fancy taking this on myself so I might just leave this one to a specialist.
