Exclamation Windshield Washer Fluid Reservoir

It appears my wife put some windshield fluid into the coolant reservoir (apparently this happened LAST WEEK). The car has driven fine, but can someone tell me the ramifications of this? Engine failure? Over-heating, etc? A friend said that no harm will be done, but I would love to hear from you experts before I hire a divorce lawyer.

In the other case, the car was barely driven so he just siphoned the stuff out as it never got a chance to mix. In your case, I'd have someone completely flush out and replace the coolant.

Completely drain cooling system & refill.

Give wife underhood tour so she knows where the stuff goes.

Thanks for all your help. One last question: Can a quickie lube oil place do a coolant change on a MINI without problem, and is there a special coolant I should ask for? Alright, that's two questions.
Thanks again.

I wouldn't trust a quickie lube place to be able to do it properly, but then I don't trust them to be able to do anything properly.

I have heard that it can be tricky to bleed the cooling system of all air when refilling. If you don't want to do it yourself it might be a job better left to the dealer or a good independent shop.

Wow. You know I almost did the same thing last week, but stopped for a minute to check out the manual. Phew! In your wife's "defense" I have to say that, if you're not particularly mechanically inclined (like ME), the coolant resevoir does look like the place to put the windshield washer fluid. Better keep the manual handy.

Thumbs up

That's great how sdmidget referenced my bone-head move on this post. Anyway, my car is still fine with no adverse affects (as would be expected considering the situation).

I would suggest having the dealer do a flush, and if not the dealer at least get some coolant from the dealer for whoever does it to use.

Thnaks all. I decided to have the dealer do a flush and re-fill. Expensive, but worth the peace of mind, I suppose. I'll let the wife work it off!
