United-Kingdom Front Ball Joint Dust Cover Mini Cooper 2001

Hi,

I've just had an MOT on my 2001 Mini Cooper, it passed thankfully. However, there is an Advisory which reads:

Offside front ball joint dust cover deteriorated, but preventing the ingress of dirt (2.2.C.1c).

My question is if I can mange to buy a dust cover will I be able to fit it myself and where does it go please?

I have no mechanical skills whatsoever!

TIA

Manic

If youve got no mechanical skill then dont touch it, you need to part the ball joint with a splitter before you can fit the new boot, then the nut needs to be torqued up to its correct tightness for which you need a torque wrench, I assume you have neither a splitter or torque wrench? plus its part of the steering so if you dont know what youre doing it could end up being dangerous if its not put back together correctly.
It should only take a garage 15 minutes maximum to do the job for you, provided you can get just the boot on its own, but if you have to buy a whole new joint the steering might need retracking afterwards which will take longer of course.

Thank you I will ask the mechanic to take a look next time he needs to decalcyfy the battery (which he has just done), before I need am MOT next year.
