My husband bought a second hand Mini Cooper 2002. It worked fine until recently when suddenly it started revving at 5000 when driving over 80kmph. He's been told it's the transmission. Now he is saying he either needs to spend thousands of dollars trying to fix and the maybe not have any success or sell it at a huge loss. Anyone got any suggestions? Thanks
The CVT is failure-prone and pretty expensive to replace. The replacement will be failure prone as well.
One can convert to a 6-speed Getrag transmission, but it's a lot of work and extra parts*, including reprogramming
the ECU to work with a manual instead of an auto transmission. I don't know if anyone has converted to the
late model R53 Aisin auto transmission, but that would be even more expensive than the two options above.
*needs different pedals, clutch line, clutch slaves, transmission mount, axles, reverse switch, clutch swiitch, wiring harnass, shifter box, shifter cables, clutch, flywheel, and a bunch of other related small parts.
can instead convert to a Midlands 5-speed (bad idea as it's somewhat failure prone as well, and still need all the extra parts) or a Getrag 5-speed (a little cheaper and lighter than the 6-speed but still need
all the extra parts, so you might as well go for the 6-speed)
Oh boy - thanks Cristo - in other words get rid of it then and start again ... sigh ...
Thanks for your help
