Yes. If the fan doesn't come on then it won't cool the engine and the car will overheat. You will need to investigate why the car is overheating. The cooling system may need flushed out / radiator replaced or thermostat replaced.
Had this issue. Even had coolent spitting out of the engine. Replaced thermostat and obviously flushed system and worked. I do however feel that cooling is not efficient in my car on stop start kind of driving. When the fan turns on it's sounds like a turbine?
