Hi guys,

My girlfriend has just purchased a Mini cooper pictured 2006 plate.

It has some faults and I have done some research online but I thought it would be best to talk to some owners.

Firstly,

Is this trim available to buy and what does it involve when fitting? Looks like it's previously just been sealed in to position, however I'm unsure if other parts are required to be removed or where to source the part (I guess the obvious would be at a stealership).

Secondly,

From what I gather you can't buy a replacement badge. It requires an entire airbag unit? ridiculous. Is that true? has anyone managed to get a badge off to see what holds it on. I was thinking of using phone opening tools to replace as behind the part that is missing it doesn't appear to be fixed in to position by anything other than some form of adhesive but I could be wrong.

I'm in the uk so anyone from the uk with experience who would be so kind to point me in the right direction for either parts I'd much appreciate it.

the winged badge is not a separate part, keep a look on ebay pic up an airbag for between £30 and £90 you could then sell yours to recoup most of the money , if the badge comes away easily you could just swap it, as I'm not a fan of second hand air bags as you don't know their history ie waterlogged ect, disconnect the battery and follow the manual before disconnecting.
ive seen keyrings with a similar badge but don't know the size.

With regards to the windscreen trim, you have probably had a replacement screen and they could have botched the trim - hence why its missing. I don't know what holds the badge on but if it is held on by adhesive then a hair dryer will soften the glue and should make it come off easier but as drozd says disconnect the battery first if working around the airbag area

Thanks for your help guys I'm on a phone so can't reply as well as when I was on the computer lol, I appreciate the help.

I thought as much with the badge such a pain, I wonder how it managed to snap, being that it's fixed flat I can only assume it was in a garage with another mini with a worse for wear badge and maybe a salesman attempted to pinch the badge to swap but ended up snapping it... Anyway Il have to think about a cheap way of sorting it, as said not really wanting to buy a second hand airbag! In event it may not deploy if required.

Thanks for the link to the dealer part on the windscreen trim. I've read posts about them not being aligned properly and all sorts. So if I buy that part am I ok to use some tiger seal to seal it in place or is his a windscreen refitting job?

Once again thanks guys!

I tried to fit one there is a deep u channel that goes over the top of the screen, there was no way I could get it on, so just used black tape to cover the gap, no one would have noticed unless it was pointed out, then a few months later a stone flew up and cracked the screen so it was the finally fitted when the screen was replaced.

I purchased the trim from one of the above links, I spoke to a brokers who reckon it can be done without the need to refit the screen and I can bond it in place. I'll have to wait for the part to see if he's correct but your post has made me think :|

Gave the car a much needed clean up and decontamination with a clay kit and then gave it a mini detail on Saturday. Meguairs Ultimate compound on a finishing pad put some much needed life back in to the paint. Also as it probably has filling properties would have hidden some swirls and removed lighter ones. It looks far better already. I've never ever seen sooo much tar on a car before. It was like it had been used on a Rally stage. Even my Focus ST 300+ and 206 180 hasn't ripped up as much tarmac as that thing lol!

Cheers she was quite happy with the turn around. It's not perfect but over time it will end up one of my little side line projects just to make it perfect. No modifications for her car only mine see that.

I have always liked minis, once upon a time I really wanted an early supercharged S. Love the whine especially with a reduced pulley! They have lovely interiors despite the fact it hasn't changed much from the early models. They're quite quirky little cars. Also love the tiny windscreen and the way it curves around you. It's just a shame the previous owner for this particular one didn't care about it. Still needs a full machine polish with more abrasive compound / pad combo at some stage to correct the absolute mess they left it in.

Are there any common problems bar gearbox, in particular to the suspension? It's got a clunk over bumps which I was guessing would be a particular bush but it could be tired old springs or top mounts?

You have the facelift model with the getrag box which is stronger than the infamous Midland box so you shouldn't have any worries. The clunking could be anything tbh but I'd check out the rear antiroll bar bushe's first if it's a rear end clunk.

I've got 3 minis. The R55 Cooper D Clubby is used by my wife and I have a 2004 R50 and a classic mini. I bought my R50 last year as a project/ weekend car. It came with it's faults but it was cheap enough and a very honest car. In the year I've had it I have repaired every defect that it had. The only mods I have on the R50 is a dash cam, tracker and a digital dab / bluetooth hands free stereo

Oh ok that's good news! I was worried about the gearbox issues I'd heard about. Yeah tbh I think it probably will need all the suspension bushes replacing. I doubt the previous owner has done anything of the sort.

Wow quite the mini fan then haha, they are very cool cars though I must say I really like them. I keep looking at the new Cooper S works in what looks like British racing green that's car porn lol!

I also do that with cars really, buy them put them right and enjoy, although I do modify my cars (not like with body kits lol) but to optimise the performance.

I'm looking forward to turning around this mini and restoring it to it's former glory.

Repair and restoration is the way I work and I tend to stick with a make of car for a while. The R50 is one of the best cars I've worked on.

I've had classic minis for years and ran Peugeot diesels as daily for years until the wife started moaning and wanting a newer car so the R55 was first on the list as a) I wanted a clubby and b) it has a psa engine so it was a win win for me. After driving the R55 I decided to get a runabout for myself so a few weeks later I sold one of the classic minis off and replaced it with the R50 lol
