I've been carefully running in my Cooper for the last 10 days but I had to use a motorway for the first time Friday night to get home quickly. I noticed a loud rumbling noise when I went over 70 MPH and it occurred to me that (since I'd never driven a MINI this fast before) maybe this was a 'normal' wind noise that I had to put up with when driving at higher speeds. The noise wasn't mechanical so I put it down to the upright windscreen design and regretted not getting to test the dealer’s car at higher speeds to at least know what to expect at motorway speeds.
However, when I went to wash the car on Saturday morning I found the source of the noise.
My short run on the motorway had caused the rubber strip (about 2.5 feet in length) at the top of the windscreen to pull out and flap around in the wind! Luckily my dealer was open and has managed to temporarily re-stick the seal and it has been held down with 'gaffer' tape (as a guitar/drum tech this is very ironic; "my car is held together with gaffer tape...") while the silicon set.
It is the second car they have had back this week with the same problem so it could be a week 13 build fault. They think the windscreen glass has been stuck on too low and left too large a gap at the top of the screen where the seal has to be slid in.
The dealer said they will need the car for 2 days for them to remove and refit the glass in the correct position and fit a new seal.
Has anyone else had this problem and has the replaced screen/seal done the job?
In one respect I’m pleased that the car doesn’t suffer from horrendous wind noise at high speeds but I was mortified when I found the cause of the noise and that my, until then, great car would be going back to the dealers so soon (870 miles).
Yesterday was not a good day…
