I'm new to minis i've a mini one 03 ... just accquired a code reader for it as the engine light kept on coming on, but the mini is driving fine , so put it on the code reader this orning and this code came up Bank 1 sensor 1 P0130 .. I've looked it up and it says a few things could be wrong but mostly it says the oxygen sensor.. has anyone else had this code , and how did you fix it Any help would be well appreciated
This cose suggests a problem with the O2 Lambda sensor in the exhaust pipe BEFORE the catalyst. (there is another one after the catalyst).
If the engine light & code appear intermitently then it could be an issue with the wiring and the connector to the ECU under the bonnet. The connectors can corrode so that the signals from the sensor is not getting throught to the ECU.
If the warning light is on permenantly and you are getting this code, it could well mean that the sensor has failed and needs replacing. However, you also need to get the car up on a ramp and carefully inspect the exhause manifold and the flexi part of the system for possible air leaks because if you have got a leak anywhere before the sensor you could be getting too much oxygen drawn into the system and the exhaust gas and the sensor is correctly reading the oxygen levels in the exhaust, and as these are too high compared to the range it is supposed to be detecting it can throw a code up.
Also, if you do end up having to replace the O2 Lambda sensor make sure you use an OEM quality sensor (which are more expensive) rather than a cheap one because the cheaper ones tend to be less reliable.
Cheers for the reply .. The light only comes on now and again, and the mini is driving fine no smoke and it's idling fine ... so I'll check the connectors under the bonnet first, and if there's nothing wrong with them I'll get a new sensor ..
