Hi new to this site and mini's. Just brought my first Mini Cooper 2002. Has a gearbox issue. Layshaft bearing...??? Understand from local garage needs a recon box, does anybody know a good supply and fit in Oxfordshire. OX14. Or any useful advice ideas?! Cheers
Bristol Transmissions is one that can be vouched for (nearest to you). Mechanics swear by them and dealers go to them for gearbox rebuilds and gearbox work.
Does the car whine when driven? Or is it just strange noises when the clutch it out and stationary?
Cheers mate. It's a little bit further than I wanted to travel really but I will look them up.
It's more of a tapping/clicking noise as you're going along. The faster you go, the faster it gets... Does disappear when clutch in. Changes gears fine?
Be very wary of getting boxes from people who claim to be "mini experts" or "mini gearbox specialists". There are lot of cowboys out there to make a quick buck if you do go for a gearbox, the safest option is a full rebuild on the one you've got. Most of these places will do the bare minimum so repeat failures do occur. Be careful and don't take warranties as an insurance of the work being carried out.
Pay the extra money budget £650-800 for the rebuild alone. Better that, than paying 300 and it going bust within a couple of months or 4000 miles.
Thanks for that, that's what I meant! Not layshaft! You'll be lucky if its a throw out bearing
