Velvet Cooper Rough Idle at 1000 RPM

When my MC turned 2000 miles old, I started getting a rough idle when the RPM's would drop down to about 1000. The whole car shakes and I have to give it gas to keep it from dying. I called the dealer and they told me this is a "known issue" and it needed a software upgrade. After the software upgrade it ran great for a couple of days and then started acting up again. After another call to the dealer I was told "yeah I know the software upgrade doesn't fix it, but MINI is working on a solution". Three weeks have passed since and still no answer. Anyone else with the same problem/fix/ideas?

A typical answer from dealer! I am not sure what do you mean by "rough idle", but my rev would drop real low for few seconds (500rpm, I thought it would stall) when clutch during stopping the car, and during reverse.

Took the car to the dealer for SW upgraded and it seems the problem doesn't happened that often.

check out all the many many threads on stalling engines and join the club. mine started with a rough idle and got so bad in 2 and a half weeks that it would stall MULTIPLE times in traffic.trasmission disengaged or in nuetral.

yeah if you look at the MCS 6 speed engine stall you will see my long rant. So much for getting a new car to not have to deal with quirky problems... I think i would have done better with my old jeep with the blown head gasket.

Rough Idle....

My 2003 MC also came down with this. Random problems, ie stalling at times, repeated need to start the car before it would hold an idle, rough idling needing to gas the pedal while at a stop light, cutout of full power (car would idle, but would have no "ooomph").

Lights on the dash (both "Service Engine Soon" and the EML) coming on, going out, staying on until multiple restarts.

Car at the time had approx 8600 miles logged.

A call to my dealer (MINI of Peabody (these guys are the best, by the way...)), they had me in in a very short time. The replaced the wiring harness in the engine compartment and the throttle body. Problem looks like it was from the electrical connection to the throttle body. Did a bunch of other stuff too, they really took care of me and the MINI.

I've talked with others that have had the same problem and the same fix. I've put another 1500 miles on the car since the repair, all is well.

My 2003 April build MCS has never stalled, but I have had the RPM's get erratic while idling with the AC on, and the car shudder a bit as if it was going to stall.

I have a dealer appt coming soon.

See ya,

You all need to get the latest software update for the engine management computer. Currently this is version 33.2 but in another thread there is a claim that version 34 is already out (At least it is in Europe).

Stay tuned.
