Harmonica sounding noise from underneath?

anyone else experience or heard of this ? It sounds like a short tune from a harmonica, lasts only seconds (<3sec). It only happens starting from a stand-still off 1st gear. It doesn't always happen, mostly when the car is cold; but have on occasion heard it on a warm engine.

I haven't driven the MCS, but my best guess would be that its something related to the supercharger spinning up?

If you hear the Harmonica sound followed by "I just called to say I love you", then I suggest you look under the car to see if Stevie Wonder is stuck under there....

I was thinking the same thing, but with Woody Guthrie.

Yes!!! Mine does this too! I've been wondering how to describe it! It also happens when reversing, especially when the engine is cold - if anyone can shed any light on this problem i'd be very grateful. It seems to happen more readily if you give a lot of gas when setting off in first gear.
Btw mine is a feb02 Cooper

At last - I'm not going mad

My 03 MCS does this (although as its been off the road for 3 weeks I'm beginning to forget !).

It's defintely not Stevie Wonder - there's no room in there for him......

Me as well. My Nov 02 MCS started doing this about 1000 miles ago. Seems to be more prevalent when moving off when cold, or slowing down when warm, if you see what I mean!

I'm pretty sure it's not brakes, clutch, fanbelt etc but I guess it could be the supercharger spinning up and down. I'm taking it for it's first service next week and have asked them to have a look.

I really don't think it could be the supercharger cos my cooper does exactly the same thing!

Same problem

I have the same problem. I took my car in for service ('03 USA MCS) a week ago, and they didn't hear it on the test drive until I drove it with the service manager in the passenger seat. They said they needed more time to look in to this, and I am scheduled to go back in at some point (when a part on recall comes in). It's annoying! Did anyone get a thorough check of this on their cars?

Update - My MCS was in for it's first checkup (at a mighty 13,500 miles) and the head technician heard the sound straight away. They've had to order a part from Germany, which I think he said was some kind of air outlet hose from the aircharger - Whatever all that stuff is. Anyway, that'll be on Friday so I let you all know what happens, and if it's fixed it get a better description of the fix so I can pass it on.
