| Quality of parts. So, is it a British car after all? Having had a Cooper S for a month, and also being the owner of BMWs, I can give a subjective opinion that the Cooper's built quality is not the same as BMWs.
Maybe that was the reason why BMW differentiated the brand. But for prospective buyers who thought they may be getting an entry level BMW, let me say that it is not. There may be some common parts, such as the rear suspension. But overall, you notice from the material that the quality is lower. It is still good, but it is not really up to BMW's standards. For example, in my car, the rain gutter trim became detached at the bend where it joins the hatch door. It is a snap in trim but somehow it would not snap in anymore. Though I would say on its defense that BMW has never been good with rubber trims.
The redeeming value is that the warranty and maintenance policies are more generous than normal cars of this size. Maybe that is the part we are paying a premium for. And for also its unique shape and engine.
