Been skimming the thread as my car has recently had a 17% pulley and belt fitted and now has the ticking noise, am i right in thinking its the vibration damper thats now causing the noise? If so is this a mission to fit? And is it expensive?

I brought my car to the workshop and rev the car in neutral for them to hear. The sound is like what you guys described, very significant on high load, low revs. R52 MCSC.
Does the sound appear slightly on neutral gear?
Mech says my exhaust is leaking after he opened the bonnet to hear but I told him the sound is more obvious in the cabin.
HELP!
What does an exhaust leak sound like?

Looks like I have just joined the club

I have a 2002 MCS with just over 100K kms on it. Had the supercharger pulley replaced with an Alta 15 % reduced pulley a few weeks back. While removing the OEM supercharger pulley my trusted mechanic found that the tensioner assembly needed replacing: the piston was empty of oil and the thin metal plate running inside the spring had broken. So off it went and on went a new OEM one.

Got home yesterday after work and pulled into the garage with the windows down. I could hear a slight and irregular ticking sound. Popped the hood and determined it was coming from the superchrager / tensioner pulley area. The radiator fan came on and the the ticking speed increased slightly. Called my guy and he wants to see the car tomorrow.

I took the car out at lunch and popped the hood again. Sure enough, there was that tcking sound again. Can't hear it while driving. Can hear it if I'm coasting with the windows down and sound is being reflected back to the car by nearby objects. Ticking speed increases when light throttle is applied and seems to persist (not sure) under light load. Can't hear it at all under heavy load as the ALTA CAI drowns everything else out

I did notice however that the ticking would (almost) stop when I pressed down on the tensioner assembly, as if the slight extra pressure lessened the clicking / ticking sound.

I'm wondering if there's anything loose on the new tensioner assembly or
that replacing the busted tensioner with the new one has revealed another problem (possible defective vibration damper)

Thanks for reading and I'll post results when I get them

I'm really sorry if this thread is solely linked to MCS's - I can't find a thread for my Mini One but I have a very similar issue. Advice would be greatly appreciated.. or redirection!

Mini One 54 reg, 46000 miles. Owned almost a year.

When I bought the car, no fluttering/ticking/paper in spokes sound. In the past few months, this has started occurring every time it's driven.

Doesn't matter if the car is idling, in gear, out of gear, gets gradually louder the faster I go and speeds up with the wheel rotations. I've tried taking out of gear also whilst travelling at varying speeds (loudest from 50mph+ and around 3000rpm) and it's still happening hence my diagnostic of wheel speed rather than engine speed. Regardless of whether clutch is in or not.

The sound itself is driver's side footwell to centre console. And is extremely irritating. Would like to know what it is so it can be fixed, I can check if anything more serious and so it's back to normal!

The heatshield has been tightened, there is a connector loose at the front of the engine bay which has been taped up, another part which the rubber had come loose from its housing - all put back together, wheel arch has also been checked and tightened. But still the sound happens.

It's been in the garage recently as had to have the 02 sensor changed, but they said they couldn't see anything it could be.

I'm wondering - could it be something to do with the crankshaft pulley / harmonic damper? Is there anything else which is common in these?

Thanks in advance.
