Weird sound coming from the engine...

Sometimes when I'm starting off in first gear I hear a strange whistling/high pitch noise that lasts only a second or two, happens almost all the time when starting off in first gear.

Anyone know what it may be?

Have your neighbours come around asking about missing cats?

Seriously though, do you get this more from a cold start, or at any time you start off in first gear?

Actually, I've only be noticing it for the past few weeks, so it may have to do something which the cold weather.

It only happens sometimes in first gear, depends how I engage. If I put gas, then let off the accelerator slowly it happens for a second or two, but it definitly only happens sometimes...

Any ideas?

Adam, I thought Alex (Supercuper) and kyriian from here and SOMC have that problem too and someone pointed to a vacuum hose. Sounds like a common thing now, perhaps a 'quality enhancement campaign' is on the way...

I woul say this sounds like the clutch thrust bearing. Get your dealer to have a listen to it. My old land rover had the same problem.

cheers

I believe this is one of the issues I had with my Cooper, in the end I had the entire clutch replaced with only a few thousand miles on it.

I have had the same problem for months. It happens in 1st gear and only when the car is cold. After the car warms up the problem usually goes away. The dealer is trying to tell me it is normal.

I'm getting ready to take it back in again. I sounds to me like a throughout bearing.

I just had my car in and the throwout bearing was an issue too

the techinician got in and lubed it or something.

the clutch was making a noise when being depressed sounded like a squeeshy dog toy.

no whistling though
gears are still tough when cold

Ha, just saw this thread and have noticed my car doing the same thing. Sounds like a kind of grinding scapey noise. Only in first, only when cold. Normally after doing it once it goes away. Is that what you guys are experiencing?

Yeah, it's the clutch. My Cooper does this too. Especially when cold and DAMP, it happens in 2nd and 3rd gear too. I took mine to the dealer, and he tried to tell me "they all do that, sir". He said that they'd tested it against another Cooper and it was exactly the same. I can't see how such a terrible noise could be normal - what to do?

Hmm, I have a feeling now it might be a brake pad sticking on the passenger side.
