DIY Check engine for loose gas cap... 6th time!

Hi Motorers,

I own my MCS since May 2003 and I've had many Check Engine lights for a loose gas cap... Yesterday, I picked up my car at the dealer to get fixed another Check Engine (for the gas cap again). I drove 100km and it went on again... I didn't touch the gas cap since my last visit to the dealer...

Has anyone had that problem before? Is there a way to fix that?

I've came across many problems with my MINI but this one is driving me nuts!

Thanks everyone!

Same topic, different car.

My brother had the same problem, it had happened 3-4 times.

He was told to make sure the gas cap was screwed on as tight as possible.

If tightening didn’t work, the only other thing they could do was to pressure check the fuel system and look for leaks.

I wonder if an added seal between the filler tube and the cap would help out?

thinking out loud

Thanks for the replies!

I always make sure the cap is fully tighten after a gas stop... My dealer changed the gas cap three times but it didn't solve the problem. I took an appointment later today to make them check for the ecu fault codes, but I'm sure it's still a loose gas cap problem...

Has anyone had the same problem (more than 5 Check Engine for a loose cap)? If so, how did your dealer fixed it? (I guess I'll have to tell my dealer how to fix this since they can't...)

Thank you for any help!

Keep motoring (with my new cruising friend : the Check Engine)

have them pressure test the system, sounds like its leaking somewhere and I'd say the gas cap is very unlikely to be the issue with so many new ones tried.

I've never had the light go on and I don't crank my cap shut, just a nice turn until I feel it click in.

I haven't had a problem with the check engine light going on for a loose gas cap, but I have had a "Check Filler Cap" light come on because I didn't have the cap tight when I got gas once.

I have a February 2003 MCS build with Navigation. This idiot light is next to the seatbelt light on the display. Do non-NAV MINI's have the "check filler cap" light like mine? Just curious...

I had a new sender/sensor installed in my gas tank last Friday, and as I left the lot, the "Check Filler Cap" light came on. A seal was leaking, so the system thought the cap was loose. New seal, and no more light.

As RickB says the check filler cap light will only light if the system sensor's a leak (presure loss) ie the filler/gas cap is loose. just because the light says "check filler cap" does not mean to say the cap is at fault!

You need to get ypur car back to the dealers because there is a leak somewhere in the system they need to be looking at all the seals, pipes, connectors etc in the system not just changing filler caps hope this helps

Thank you Studboy!

I decided to change dealer for the next service ( which is next Monday!) The advisor told me they would look at the whole fuel system for a leak... Hopefully they'll find it!

Oh have them check the O2 sensor... I think it was that sensor... Tavis1 had the same problem the light kept comming on and off and hey MADE sure the cap was tight and it turned out that he had a faulty O2 sensor.
