Time For A 3rd Clutch?????

Got the same problem as I had last year, squealling/ grinding noise when dipping clutch to pull away at low speed.
Had the clutch replaced under warrenty last year at 15,000 miles. Done 10,000 on the new clutch and the noise has returned. Is it time for a new one? And what is it? When I told my dealer the problem last year he was quite happy to put a new GEARBOX in if neccessary, a she said 'Hell, its under warrenty" got a way with a replacement clutch tho.
Any thoughts?

maybe you need to modify your driving style. 15k and 10k is a lot of miles before a fault is discovered, i wouldnt bet against it being something to do with your driving, maybe. At least you're getting it replaced for free.

this seems to becoming more common

see these threads for details

http://www.mini2.com/forum/first-generation-faults-fixes/51674-clutch-noise-help.html

http://www.mini2.com/forum/first-generation-faults-fixes/50848-strange-sound-when-pulling-away.html

I've had the problem since 3.5k miles so I don't think it's my driving style at fault..

thankfully it doesn't seem to be affecting performance though [ie, no clutch slippage]

Would be good to hear if anyone has had their dealer find a lasting cure for this

Mines a May 03 build Cooper BTW

Had this when pulling away in 1st sometimes is squeaks a little sometimes not. I asked my wife to mention it at the service they checked it and said all is fine.

The clutch does not slip it just lets this pathetic little noise out. It only happens in 1st no other gears, and as said already only occasionally, maybe heat related cold start ??

Its not gear noise as seems to be coming from somewhere else.

Characteristic, maybe. As long as its nothing bad I can live with it.

My car is 2002 Feb build.

hi

I just got my 04 MC-manual on Feb 28. And i have been trying to how to drive manual for a bit while. Something happened. The clutch is burned out and it smells weird. Finally the car towed away back to the dealership. Whats going on with my car? The car is on only 40 km. Isnt that funny? Well, sucks to be me!

mine does that sometimes too, I think it might be the flywheel. can't realy expain it, but look up our dual mass flywheel in your MINI nitty gritty handbook, its something to do with the way the flywheel twists to absorb engine shock going to the drivetrain.

Our car was driven by a MINI mechanic today who under "normal" driving conditions could not replicate the noise.

He tried a slightly more spirited start and it screeched every time. He asked my wife to undo the passenger side window whilst he accelerated and feels he knows where the noise is coming from.

Its due to go in in a week or so, the same techie is going to look at it, I will post the outcome.

Any news on this? I think I have the same problem, my car is booked in next week. Would like to have a bit of "ammo" to back up my theory!

Thanks

Thanks

It went in today.

She rang service desk as they didn't ring her.

They said they can hear the noise, and wondered whether it was due to our exhaust, being a Magnex. I think they were just being s. My wife, who uses the car all week, said it had nothing to do with the exhaust. They said they would check it again tomorrow, as it was booked in for two days.

The disturbing thing here is that they have suggested it is the exhaust which is b**sh*t !

We have been reporting the problem for over a year and this was before the exhaust was fitted !! I think either they simply don't know how to fix it or don't want to. Hope its the first of these.

Will let you know what they say tomorrow.

Thanks Wrenny, the way I described the noise to the dealer was that the clutch/gearbox was squeaking on slow pull aways especially when pulling away on a slope, said that it sounded as if it was moaning when pulling away

Trouble is it isn't a frequent problem.

Mine could also be an exhaust problem though as they have already replaced one of the exahust mounts so could be a repeat of an initial problem - DOH

Best of luck getting yours fixed

Olly

This sounds the same as mine, though it might not. Could be two different issues.

Car booked in for new clutch in a couple of weeks.

This should resolve the problematic gear change aswell, fingers crossed.

Good luck with yours

What sort of gearchange problems do you have?

Mine runs out of warranty in October, I plan to change it before then anyway but I don't want to sell a MINI with a duff clutch

Thanks

The gearchange is as sweet as honey changing up and is pretty good coming down. The only problem I get is from 3rd to 2nd it doesn't always shift in smoothly, other times it goes in no problem.

There is no grinding you would expect with a gearbox issue. Maybe it is a dysfunctional clutch. I certainly hope so.

I think what helped us was that my wife has been reporting this for some time, so dealer knows that it is not a new problem.

adios and good luck
