Pull up on the rear seat squab... the front two edges will pop up. There is a cable with a metal loop underneath if you're lucky... give it a tug and the boot will open!

Ridiculously earlier build MINIs such as mine (July 02) do not have the emergency release cable even though it is in the manual.

If you have to break the parcel shelf to get in to the rear seat mechanism then I would hope you are covered under warranty Max.

Just out of interest, what were the symptoms the first two times? 3 changes in the same area makes me think your dealer might not have found the root cause yet... By the way, what's the build date of your car?

I have been having the same problem... I went to the dealer last week and they replaced the latch... today I went out to my car and it will not open!.. so upset ... The thing that I don't understand is it how it can be so ramdom... at first i thought it was the cold weather but today it is warm and sunny.

I feel your pain.

I figured it out!... kinda...

I held the handle in for about 10 seconds and it popped open ... now I just need to figure out why this keeps happening... I think that the remote locking features are messed up... there is one that unlocks the boot if you hold the unlock button for 5 seconds and the other unlocks the boot if you push the button twice... but I guess it could be anything...

I hope it works for next time it happens... but lets hope it doesn't do it again.

Mine is an '02 MCS and I had the emergency release cable retrofitted free of charge at the dealer. Good thing too, as I have had to use it as I'm locked out of the hatch now also!

However, some friends with '02 MCS' were not so lucky - the dealer would not install the emergency release kit.

Mine had jammed once in the first three months of ownership, but has gone 3 times in the last 6 weeks. Another early-build MCS, so no manual release cable. The time before last when it jammed it was *extremely* inconvenient/embarrasing, as a lot of important papers that I needed for work were stuck in the boot.

Right now, it's jammed. Despite a new actuator being fitted last week.

On the bright side, at least the dealer's had the job of cleaning the car every time it's needed doing since Christmas.

Ordered my "S" August '01. Arrived July '02. EB with white roof, wheels and stripes, Chili pack, DSC and climate control. Hate those 17" runflats though.

Can now be seen all over the West Midlands, as a blue blur passing everything at speed

I'm having a very odd behaviour when opening my hatch. When I click the remote key or the central lock from within the car to unlock the hatch, no matter how hard I try to pry it open, it won't budge. After playing around after awhile, I found that the only way to open it (aside from climbing into the back seat to pull the emergency cord from underneath the seat) was after unlocking using the remote key, and then flipping the headlights on and off, the hatch would suddenly pop open. If I kept flipping the headlights on and off while the hatch is already open, I hear "clicking" noises. I'm wondering if some of the wiring got screwed up from getting wet because the last time I successfully opened the hatch normally from just using the remote key it was raining. So STRANGE. any ideas?? anyone??

MCS boot latch fault

I know this thread is a tad old but hopefully someone may have an answer? This is the second boot lock I'm on, my problem is it just won't shut, despite pushing key buttons, winding in the boot lid stop rubbers or slamming it! I can hear a clicking from the latch when I press the boot lid catch but doesn't seem to make any difference it simply refuses to lock the boot lid. At least the alarm works when you open the boot lid!!!

My second latch was fitted under warranty but my warranty has expired now so i wonder if BMW are obliged to replace what is a faulty part?

Any magic cures or suggestions?

Ta
