Unhappy Broken oil dipstick

Check carefully your oil levels folks; apparently I didn't some time back & now I have a busted-off dipstick stuck in the tube.

At the 30,000+ mile check last October (I've just rung up 43K!) I'd noticed a kink in that fiberglass thing BMW's "engineered" & asked for a replacement, though had no reason to get back to the dealer to pick it up after it arrived....

I went to check the oil level last week & found the kink served as a failure point.

I was left holding the 'stick handle & about 6 inches of dipstick, the meaningful part remained behind.

Dealer syays the oil pan has to come off to get the broken end out properly.

That, unfortunately might be the only way to get it out. There is a procedure I've used that has worked on occasion in the past, but I hesitate to recommend it. If they're going to do it under warranty let them. If not and you want to try this PM me and I'll fill you in.

They didn't have a pan gasket in stock, or the replacement 'stick either, so it'll be a couple more days in the shop. All I can hope for is that they get the pan on right & it doesn't end up leaking, and I don't kink the replacement 'stick again sometime after the warranty expires.

At the rate I rack up miles, that'll be sometime this coming July....
