hose off it idles, on/not

2003S
I was checking the oil level, and noticed the vacuum hose on the left front was off. I put it back on and then it would not idle. Took it off, and all seems well??

I'll call the dealer on Monday, but I'll bet somebody knows the story.

thanks
Steve

I had exactly the same problem with my last car (520i). I was told its not good to drive with the pipe off though. Had to go in to the garage, and there was a fair bit of head scratching. I cant remember what was replaced or what the problem was exactly, but I would recomend you get it looked at asap.

If it's pulling vacuum you're sucking dirt directly into the engine, not good.

It could be that the car is richening up the mixture so much because of the vac leak that when you reapply the vac hoses it runs so rich it quits.
take it to the dealer.

thanks to all for suggestions. the dealer thought that maybe the hose fell off, the computer adapted so when I put the hose on tha air/fuel was off. I tried to drive for 20-30 mintes to see if the computer could re-learn, but to no avail.

dealer appt on Friday

thanks

steve

Just an update in case anyone has this problem. The hose came off slowly enough, the computer kept adapting. Then when I put it on, set values were way off. They reset a few values, and fitted a more rigid hose, and all is well. I'm a little surprised more have not had this problem.

Car should run better or at least idle better. Does it?

The idle is now normal, and pulls strong wot. I guess I did not notice the loss of power with the hose off, but guess I lost 10-15%. Back to normal, the sun was shining, roof open, and life is good.
