Angry Sunroof leaks to drivers footwell - MINI towed away

Returned home to find my MINI at airport with several inches of water in driver's footwell. After testing with hose, water is leaking in two places - the front drivers IBeam (where there's two small holes in the rain gutter) and a more major leak from the sunroof.

In heavy rain (and it has rained daily in Northwest Ohio for past two weeks) it is more than a drip - looks like an open faucet of water onto the floor. The water is visible on the lower part of the dash by driver's left knee as well as around the door. Of course, the carpet is continuously soaked and beginning to have that wet, musty odor.

Trying to schedule the MINI's trip to the dealer around the daily t-storms (and my work schedule) has been difficult. I had planned to drive the 2.5 hours early this morning, and return in a rental car ... but, of course, woke up to yet another t-storm. MINI Roadside Assistance did agree to tow the car to the dealers (there is something very painful about driving in the rain watching your car flood around your feet),

There have been some other reports on MINI2 of water leaks ... and much difficulty getting them resolved.

I haven't had a leak but I have a recommendation for you. Make sure they replace any carpet that was affected. This should be covered under warranty as the fault caused the damage to the carpet.

RIP Boo

Thanks for tip!

I've said on phone and in my note (in car) to replace the carpet ... dealer is currently talking about a "thorough cleaning." I'm waiting until they've had a chance to actually inspect the car and see how much damage the water caused. I do want the carpet replaced.

Sorry to hear about your leaky roof. ive had similar problems on other cars. thats the main reason i didnt go for a sun roof on my mini.

dont settle for a carpet clean. i would also be expecting a full wiring inspection too.. water and dampness / moisture can find its way into all sorts of places. it can easily damage electircal components.

Nothing against Mini as I haven't even taken delivery yet but my last 3 Hondas have had sunroofs and not one drop from any of them.

I've always heard complaints about leaking sunroofs (especially aftermarket) but I've had a sunroof on every car I've ever owned. Never had a problem (except the time I left the roof open on my BMW 2002ti and it rained

I didn't even think about the electrical wiring which I probably never got dried out. I was too focused on mopping up the floor. Dealer never mentioned wiring so I'll call and ask them to check it, too.

The sunroof drain is not attached to the sunroof cassette allowing water to drip down the A- pillar into the carpet. Unfortunately the water passes through some major wire connectors and the fuse holder before it soaks into the carpet. Hopefully your technician will inspect for water damaged components. The mention of a mold/mildew allergy should resolve your carpet replacement issue.
