Noisy idling?

Has anybody had a problem with a noisy transmission idle?
I normally have my radio on, but this morning I decided not to.
Once I'd parked at work, I popped the 'box into neutral, lifted the clutch and thought "What the **** is that?"
The noise disappeared after pressing the clutch, so I would assume it is the idler gear making a bit of a racket.

Could be part of the clutch. On a previous car, not a mini, I had a rattle in neutral but not when the clutch was pushed. It went when I had a new clutch.

Thanks Malin.
It's being serviced next week so I'll give it a mention.

There are a number of threads relating to this problem. Some dealers react in a positive manner while others ignore it and hope that you will go away.

do a search with the words "gearbox noise" and you'll uncover a load of threads...

Heres one I started for my problems...

http://www.mini2.com/forum/showthrea...=gearbox+noise

Incidentally, my gearbox flywheel and clutch were all replaced at the same time... at that point the dealer told me that Mini knew about it, but hadnt worked out a fix yet, its something to do with a tolerancing issue inside the box... mine sounded like a diesel...

If you let the clutch out really slowly whilst in neutral with the engine running you wont hear the noise, thats because the tolerancing problem doesnt get aggravated... It took me a long time to get my dealer to sort it, and wasnt very pleasant, but they did it and now its perfect !....

Good luck, for your reference my dealer is Prestonhall Mini in Stockton-on-Tees....

Thanks guys!
I had searched on "idler" and "gear" but returned nothing useful...however "idler" did link to my profile!

I am after some back-up, so I will be printing out several threads relating to issues I have raised with the dealer.

Thanks again!
