Groaning noise on acceleration when cold?

Evening all!

I don't know if anyone has experienced this before? Recently I noticed a creaking/groaning noise when pulling away from standstill. It only happens at low revs when the engine is cold, and only happens from standstill (ie. not accelerating at low revs).

The only way I can describe the sound is that it is a little like accelerating when you have not disengaged the handbrake fully....

I know that if I take it to BMW, the problem will miraculously disappear as soon as I pull into the forecourt - why does that always happen

If anyone has any clues I would be most appreciative

Oddly enough our demo car which is now running again after another batch of mods
has just started doing that,it also happens in reverse and only when pulling away gently.
I WILL find out what is is ,unless someone tells me/you first!
Like you say sounds a bit like a brake binding very slightly.

Thanks for your reply roland. I have read the threads about the alternator belt "chirping" and simillar problems - I am no mechanic, but this seems to be too subtle to be that (if the climate contol fan is blowing or the stereo is on you won't hear it).

Doh - sorry if that last statement sounded obvious, but you know what I mean

I'd be very interested to hear your follow up.

regards,

Ben.

No problem,
The noise Im getting is more consistent with wheel speed than engine speed,
ie driveshafts, brakes etc . Ill get it on the ramp next week and try running it up in gear
and having a listen.

This happens to me and has happened many times in my BMW when very cold out. I just figured it was normal and still think it is. Although I don't know what it is exactly, I likened it to the moisture being burned off the brakes after sitting at night in the damp cold because it occurs a lot when I lightly tap the brakes after starting to move.

I don't think this is a defect...?
