Windscreen wiper cut out...

Well yesterday was the highest rainfall ever recorded in my area!

Guess what decided to stuff up?

Well your read the title - my Windscreen wipers!

I was wondering if anyone knew if the cooper S (are they different) windscreen wiper motor had a thermal cutout to protect the motor from cooking itself?

They seem to be cutting out when on full speed - at randomly occuring interims...

What makes it even scarier as you just dont know when it goes, so they went on me on the highway at 100km/h in the wake of the cars infront.

When you turn the motor off and startagain - so do the wipers

If I click them back to 2nd fastest speed I dont have an issue...

My car is at the dealers at the moment - they are not sure at all.

Can someone help me!?!

Todd

United-States Really sounds like...

... the wiper relay (or switch) is (/are) "toast".... or at least "pre-toast".

The dealer will (hopefully) figure it out for you. Good luck.

Chers mate - its odd that the thing comes on and off though... and there is no problem on the lower settings??

Its at the dealers anyway, so hopefully they find soemthing sooner rather than later. ITs odd casue its summer here and the car is coming up to being 12 months old...

United-States The fact...

...that it does not do "it" at the other speeds really leads me to believe that the relay, switch, or perhaps even the wiper motor are "having more than a bad day"...

It may even be a combo of two or all three... you know, "electrical gremlins"...

But soon you will have either confirmation of one or a combo of the above... or the dealer will hopefully find the fault even if it is not one that we have discussed.

Wish you a quick and painless resolution to your problem so you can motor safely and happily once again.

United-States This thread is/was...

...a somewhat "grim" and uncanny forshadowing of an event to come !!!

..And now it has fortunately (hopefully) passed.

I had exactly the same issue today. Drove straight over to our friendly local dealer and had it sorted out. The capable techs found the problem straightaway... the relay... caput.

This thread actually prepared me for today's issue.

Me too

This happened to me also in January. Thread "Windshield wiper failure". Anyhow the dealer replace two relays but guess what. First bad weather day since then today and its happened again on the way to work. Had to turn back and am about to drop it off for them to look at in the next little while. I'm not impressed.

Its going to take a fair while to build up any trust in the wipers after this.

I read elsewhere that it can be caused by an intermittent short in the motor itself. I'll post later the dealers fresh diagnosis.

Very frustrating, and potentially dangerous.

guess what

you guessed it about 6 months ago i was driveing to work when it justed starded
to rain i managed to get to work
took car to the dealer in my lunch
the dealer did the usall test the fuses , wiper motor etc
then i got a call a work saying that one of the multi plugs that has power to the
wiper has failed (when the wipers packed in i had no wipers at all)
so they would have to replace the plug but they can not just get the plug
they have to replace the part of the engine harness of which no one had
so after 5 days harness came then fitted
job done
ha ha if that was true
2 months later wipers failed i phoned the dealer they said bring it in
on the way to take it in it came on
i phoned the dealer said do not bother untill it failes completley
so hear we are wiper goes of just when you nead it most
so when this happends i lift the bonnet and start shaking the wires that i think
they have touched i do not know if this is the fault but they do come on
who knows it could be the motor cooling or or or not a clue

help help
