Driver's side door won't lock/unlock properly

I read somewhere, sometime ago, that there is a simple way to reprogram the door locks on the MINI Cooper using the key in position 1, and hitting and holding certain toggle switches.

Does anyone know those options and how to activate them properly?

Reason: after 2 years of ownership (2003 MINI CVT, May build), my driver's side door lock will not "go down" (that is: lock) when I press the lock button on the key fob. The passenger side works. Also, when I get out of the car and attempt to press the lock down manually, there is resistance (feels like a spring-loaded mechanism), and it won't budge, therefore I cannot lock my driver's side door!

But here's the odd thing: with the door shut, engine on, and driving, I press the driver's side door lock and wouldn't you know, it locks fine -- no resistance. But then it won't unlock using the toggle switch! It will unlock using the "pull-twice" door handle manual method.

Seems like some sort of electro-mechanical failure. Maybe some sort of actuator or solenoid, but I don't know for sure how the door locks work. I do know that ever since delivery, when I press the "lock" or "unlock" buttons on the key fob, there is a loud motorized whining sound and some clicking eminating from the rear driver's side quarter panel... is that where they put the door-lock/unlock solenoid/motor? It's very loud, always has been, thought it was normal.

Anyway, I'm hoping a simple reset will fix it, but I doubt it...can't hurt trying though. Looks like an appointment with the dealer is in order real soon...can't leave my car unlocked in parking lots!

Thanks for your help,

Power Door Lock Actuator causing power locks not working.

I have a 2003 R53 and my driver's side power door lock doesn't work at all either with the key or from the inside. It's all manual at this point. I took it to the dealer about a month ago and they said it's the Door Lock Actuator. Not sure how their part numbers work, but they gave me 51200556768. HOwever, my plan is to buy the part myself and install myself since the door is easy to remove. According to them (Mini Dealer), total cost to replace was like $497.00 with the part itself only being $184 which meant labor was going to be $302 (2.5hours of labor). I was able to find a site where I could get the actuator for about $117. Once I get the part and install, I'll report back to confirm that, that's what it was and how long it really took me.

The part # you've put down differs from what I have - what year is your Mini?

Ayhow, see my post here for instructions on removing and installing the Rotary Latch Lock:

Hope it helps!

This forum is proving so incredibly useful.
My drivers side door behaves in exactly the same way,and has done for a few weeks whilst i try and find out what it is rather than paying rediculous dealership prices.
After reading the info on here it is definitely the solenoid. So grateful that i wont need to spend anymore on my cooper s at this time as i've just done the pre-cat lambda sensor too :S
All that's left to do then is to find out where i can get the best value solenoid and how to fit it... )
