Angry Engine Problem!

pictures this... i

ts 10.40 and im just about to leave the pub with my friend to go on to a club. we have to pick someone up along the way so we go there first.
i pull over to let my friend in the car and we hear a horrible rattling coming from my engine. i popped the bonnet and we couldnt see anything but theres an unusual amount of fluid on the engine! by now i was a bit worried. i turned my car back on and go to pull away and find myself with NO POWERSTEERING!! i then struggled to move the car about 10 meters forward and the temperture gauge went through the roof!! by now there was lots of smoke and i was very worried! i removed my keys and some belonging and stood well back from the car.

even tho i had removed the key the engine was still running!

it turned out that a belt on the engine had SNAPPED wrapped itself around over engine parts and the lid of the tank that your not supposed to put winscreen wash in was MISSING!??

this all happened around 11.00ish i did not get home till gone 2.00 on the back of a toe truck! being a bank holiday i am now miniless!!

my mini cooper is a june 05 and only done 5517 miles!! i always drive sensible and was wondering if this is a common problem?

If you turn your MINI into a time machine then these things will happen (june 05 )

Seriously, sorry to hear of your troubles and that your night/weekend was spoiled
I don't think it's a common problem, you've just been unfortunate

Hopefully you'll be re-united with your MINI very soon

Sorry to hear about your problem, its certainly not all all common, in fact I'd say its a one off, I expect you mean the power steering expansion tank as to where the cap was missing, maybe the flailing belt that snapped got it off somehow, but it doe'nt seem that likely and all the belts are on the right of the car as you face the engine bay, all the fluid reservioirs are on the left or centrally placed, theres a lot of drive belt guarding and material to get through as well. You say the year is 05, but was built in June 04 ?, thats a little curious, as 05 spec does not normally appear until Sept 04, maybe you had better check with your dealer as to what you have there. That aside, the problem you describe is quite unique, I'm at a loss to figure out what it might be. Bad luck you are without a car for the holiday period and hope it all comes back fixed soon.

i have no engine mods or anything.
its really odd! the belt that has snapped is to the bottom left (as you look at the engine) and the tank without a lid is the one that you discribed. in the middle of last year the slightly ajusted the spec with the new front bummers etc.. i have a model like that.
