EML Troubles

I have a Mini Cooper S that has travelled some 6,500 kilometres since new. It was purchased in December 2004.
Since new it has suffered from an intermittent miss or faulter at 2800 to 3000 rpm. The dealer has reprogrammed the accelerator settings and the problem has reduced somewhat.
Just recently on mild acceleration at 3000 rpm there was a loud bang and the car lost all power. The eml yellow light and the engine yellow light came on and it was impossible to exceed approx 10 kph. The car was picked up by Mini roadside assist. The dealer believes that an intermittent fault had occured and that basically the engine management system had chucked a wobbly. They reset the system and off we went. This morning, some 500 kilometers after the previous failure, the same thing happened but without the bang. All power disappeared. I stopped the car, turned off the ignition and restarted it. The eml light went out, power was restored but the engine fault light has remained on. At lunch time I did three seperate trips. On the third trip the engine fault light went out and hence there is now no sign that any fault has occurred.

Has this problem been previously reported? Does the engine management black box need replacing? I am very nervous when dealers tell me that they can find nothing wrong and that the fault is just intermittent.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Kind regards
Rudolf Werner

Sorry to hear of your probs .

I had a similar problem when my MC was only 6 months oldish. Was told that it was the main engine wiring loom, had that replaced and no more probs. get your dealer to look more into it as I lost alot of confidence in the mini for awhile because of this fault.

Here's hoping that problem will be solved and fixed asap then back to happy mini motoring.

I've never heard of a fault like this before, but just because the fault light went out, doesn't mean the fault isn't logged in the ECU.

Go back to the dealer and demand to see the log of faults from your ECU and push them harder to fix it - this doesn't sound like something that will fix itself!

Good Luck!
