GPS Navigation system reseting??

I just love my MINI , and really appreciate this web site.

I have the GPS Navigation system installed and absolutely LOVE it. I will never be lost again.

Has anyone else had this problem (or NOT had this problem?) :

In the map navigational screen, everything seems to work fine (and the driving directions are spoken in a great British woman's voice) until I go into the
Information section. Whenever I do that (when it would normally offer information like restaurants/hotels/etc on either the destination or current location) the whole NAV system resets itself after a few seconds.

It never even show the screen where I could choose the hotel/restaurant. After 15 seconds or so, it just goes black, shows the MINI wings, and then I'm back at the main screen like it does when I first start the car.

I'm in New York, and using the CD for my area of the country. Any ideas? Bad software? Unimplemented feature? (even though it's in the user manual)

Thanks for your feedback.
-Gerrit

Hmmmm

Apparently not too many people opted for the GPS navigation system then. Any BMW owners who can comment?

Thanks,

Gerrit

I've ordered the nav system on Baby Blue, but the car won't be here until the first week of July. I'm going to be playing with the system extensively (I'm a gadget geek), and I would be happy to report if my system has the same problem once I've figured it out.

remind me in about 3 weeks if I forget to send you an update

Mine doesn't

I've got the NAV, with DC's area, and don't have that problem -- it sounds like the system, not the CD, but either way it's not supposed to do that! I love it, too --we have an unpopular opinion, but that's the MINI way, right Good luck -- my sales people had no clue at all about the system, and I fear the service guys are no better informed..

I only got my Cooper yesterday, but I tried what you said on my NAV system; it worked fine,

Maybe you have a bad spot on your CD; when it tries to access the "points of interest" it crashes.

navigation system information problem

yes - I'm having same problem -- going to Information ---> Destination the system shuts down and restarts as if the entire car was turned off. Didn't do this at first -- but now can't get any info except Route List.

I LOVE THE NAVIGATION SYSTEM !!! IT IS LIKE A MIRACLE!!

NAV status update

Well, for no reason my "points of interest" started working (right when I was trying to show my buddy how it was broken). I hadn't tried it in a few weeks since it wasn't working anyway.

So currently mine is functioning, even though I did absolutly nothing to fix it. I didn't even eject my nav cd.

Hope it works out for you Roberts.

Cheers,

Gerrit

Mine does the same. However, I have a BMW CD from 2000 and not the new CD for the system. Should be getting the right CD in a couple days (the dealer was out or something) so I was just hoping that it was an unimplemented feature on the old CD.

kid & Gerrit,

While I have not experienced the Nav System resetting problem, I would like to ask about the Nav CD itself. I have suspected that I was provided with an improper non MINI-specific CD for a while now, but your comments seem to confirm this. Here are my reasons for thinking this:

Reason 1:
The CD I received--it was shipped to me after I took delivery of my Cooper S--was in a BMW labeled case.

Reason 2:
When I select "Information" --> "Vehicle" and then try to choose "MINI Centers" no MINI centers are displayed. Yet plenty of Gas Stations and restaurants, etc are displayed using other criteria so I know the "information" feature is working.

Reason 3:
Gerrit, you said the navigation directions are spoken in a "lovely British accent". You are located in New York. I am located in Baltimore, MD. I think we use the same Map CD (I think it's Map #6) yet my vocal directions are spoken with a horrible mid-atlantic accent.

Kid, could you give me a bit more information about when you receive your "correct" CD instead of the BMW one. I'll need this ammo when I speak with my dealer.

Thanks a million! And, yes, the extra $1,600 is *definitely* worth it!

Thanks,
Christian

Very interesting. I was to believe that the voices on the NAV System were generated by the system itself, not the Map CD! I may be wrong on this.

Also, mine will speak in German.

Of course, there should be an OBVIOUS Part about MINI SERVICE CENTERS listed on the CD.

These come out once per year. Considering that NO MINI dealers officially existed until March, how would the CD have that information current?? I see no Mini dealers/service centers either on mine.

My CD has MINI stamped on it, so I'm sure it is for my system.

I have been told that I will receive one free CD upgrade with the purchase of the car. So, in 2003, I am sure the New CD will have all the current dealers/service centers listed. And, if we're lucky, perhaps the "traffic" function will be activated as well (although I won't hold my breath on that one!)

Cristian,

Your dealer needs to get you the right CD.

There's no mistaking the correct MINI nav cd. It has the MINI logo on it and looks very authentic. And yes, I'm using #6 and it speaks in either a British or German voice, whichever you choose.

I tried a BMW cd when I first got my car (before I had the 'official' cd, and yes, I verified that a normal BMW CD will work for most of the features.

Perhaps we should try to copy the CDs for the 6 different regions, and trade them around so we can drive anywhere in the US with the detailed map. (It does have the major highways for the whole US however, just not smaller city or street detail.)

Quite right Gerrit. I called NavTech yesterday and a very helpful woman confirmed that there is indeed a specific CD for the MINI even though BMW CDs will work. She Fedexed it out to me free of charge. It should arrive tomorrow! I can't wait for the British accent!

Thanks for all of your help!

Christian

Received new Nav CD but....

O.K. I received the new MINI specifc nav CD from NavTech today as promised.

It indeed says MINI on the disc and packaging.

Inserted the disc, fired up the Nav System, and...same voice!! No lovely british accent, and no MINI Centers! I'm going to get close (~.5 miles) to my MINI dealer and then try it to see if the center shows up, but other than that what's up with the voice?

I'm beginning to suspect redbackfur is right that the voice is stored within the system rather than CD. So this brings up the obvious questions of Nav System's software version number. If you go into 'settings' the version number appears in the upper right corner. Mine says "SW 3-1/50". According to the manual this means:

3: Generation 3
1: Top navigation
50: current version (5.0)

Could Gerrit and redback, could you please check your version numbers for me?

Thanks a million,

Christian

I hate to break it to you, but the S/W version of mine is also 3-1/50. How yours doesn't speak GB or German is a mystery!

Same Problem

I just started to have the "reboot" issue as well, worked fine for the first 2 weeks, even after the nav-tv install. then just as recent as last week (when i had the cold start software upgrade installed) i have the reboot whenever I select any of the "information" options. I Upgraded to the new 3/60 software to see if this would resolve the issue with no luck.

My dealer is going to take a look at it on tuesday. Ill let you know what happens, or if anyone has the fix let me know.

My question, have you had the cold start software update installed? could this be caused by the reprograming of part of the car?

Jay
