Horrible noise at slow speeds (from wheels)

Hi People!

I put a post on here a few days ago about my Mini Cooper making strange noises when travelling below 10 MPH. It is like a rubbing noise when the wheels rotate.

When I took it to the Dealer, they said there were reports from Goodyear that in the heat, the tyres expand and rub (on something, not sure what!)

It has been much cooler the past couple of days, and the noise seems to have gone. Has anybody else had this issue?? My initail concern was wheel bearings.

The noise is worse when I've been on the motorway, which makes sense I guess with the tyres getting warmer.

Please let me know if there are any similar experiences???

Thanks!

Dean

Dean -- I had a very similar experience last week. It turned out to be a piece of road gravel stuck between the front brake rotor and the dust shield. Once I popped the wheel off it took about five seconds to solve the problem. Sorry if this already occurred to you; I tend to start with the basics. Pete

I've had a funny grinding sound at below 5mph since doing a run up in Yorkshire in May. Haven't been able to identify what it is having had all four wheels off the ground and giving them a spin. Doesn't seem to have caused any problems though and it's not especially loud. I can only hear it if the radio is off and I try and listen for it.

I was told it is the Good Year runflats. The get noisy after 23K. I'm runnin 17 inch S-Lites with the Good Year All Season runflats.

It a rubbing sound, sub 15 MPH. It doesn't get louder with higher speed..rules out a bearing. Applying Brakes does nothing (while maintaining speed)...rules out discs/calipers/pads.

When I change tire if It doesn't go away I'll look further into it.

Hi There!

Yes please let me know how you get on.

For now, mine has stopped

But it stopped before and came back again! Maybe could be varying tyre pressure with changing tempratures? What do you think?

Cheers,

Deano

I think you might be on to something. I really notice it on first drive in the AM. Maybe the colder tire/less pressure.

I had the same thing with 16" Goodyear runflats on a Cooper at 18k. A rubbing/grinding type of sound from the fronts when crawling along. The dealer said that this is a know issue with the run flats as they wear. The cure apparently is to remove the tyre and rotate it 90 degress and refit. Go figure. I've just replaced the Goodyears with Pirelli Eufori and the noise ha gone.

Yes it is def a tyre issue, i had the same on my Cooper. They removed the tyres, greased the edges and refitted perhaps a different way round I don't know but the noise disappeared. However this was only after I got the old "oh they all do that " story from my dealer and then I complained direct to Mini who got the dealer to look at my car again. Seems to be a known problem.
