G-Tech Pro : Curious...

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying a G-tech pro but I'm doubtfull about this....

Does it work?
Is it accurate?
Does it have to be visible or can I just stuff it in the glove box and read the results when I arrive?
Can I download the figures and maybe gaphs(?) on my computer to keep track of evolution...

I wan't this for two reasons :
I wan't to tune my mini (mainly JCW) but I want to know where I start from and where I get....
I also own a 1973 super beetle convertible that has benn seriously tuned but I'm lacking figures and the closest dyno is 40km away and I can't afford to loose that much time during working hours....

Any advice, info, experience, comment are warmly welcome...

Sebastien

i have a gtech Pro, and yes, i can tell you it does work. Its great for doing 0-60 times, 1/4 mile times, in gear acceleration times, 0-100 mph times, it can do kph too.

It won't however give you WHP or actual BHP - but what you can fo is get your horse power before and after conversions. The reason it doesn't give BHP is that the measurements are taken on the road, where aerodynamics come into effect - unlike at a dyno where the car is still.

Its been seen to be very very accurate - they have run them at drag strips and the times are extemely close - you have to spend thousands to get more accurate.

Handy function is the shift light feature - ideal for when on track.

The device needs to be mounted on the screen - you need to be able to see it to use it properly. It sreacts to your engine revs which it 'hears' electronically through the cigarette lighter connection.

There are two models, the S - which stores info on runs but cannot download, and the R, which you can connect to your pc.

It won't be any good for your bettle dyno power as it won't give you figures that equate to dyno horse power... although they do have some conversion charts on their website, personally I don't think thats actually sceintific.

thanks for all this info,

I actually don't care for an exact BHP number but I would love a reference I can refer to...
Same road, similar weather, same car, if I can get a before and after value, I'll know the enhace is XX% and will know what worked and what didn't....

I really want to be able to keep history so I'd be going for the R one... And considering I'll be playing with two car and I'm pretty sure My brother will want to play with his MCS and Wesfield, I think the extra cost is acceptable...

What version do you have? If R, could you post or mail me some pictures of the downloaded data?

I believe this might go on my to buy list along with the JCW Gear shift indicator and some other stuff I don't need at all....

Thanks for the info....

i have the S version so no downloads... although it does store up to 40 runs, and you can see the charts on screen and manipulate the data.

Bought it off ebay, they're on there regular.

You won't need the JCW shift indictor if you have this as it has this built in. You can also set the revs that you want to shift at - handy if you move the red line of your car when tuning.

I think I'll go for the R because holding data on a few cars and knowing what is corresponds to might become tricky....

I sure don't need the JCW shif light but I want it... As for the G-tech taking staying in the car a all times, I don't see it happen since both cars are convertible and tempting people to steal me is not necessary... And it would mean when I leave the roof open, I have to put the G-tech in the glove box...

I'd end leaving it in the glove box at all times... JCW shift light has to be in my car, It can be no other way...

Thanks for all this help and advice, I'm going on ebay to find one and I'll let you know how it turns out...

Sebastien

Any photos Tony? I shall have to take a closer look at it at Bedford Aerodrome track day.

Friend of mines borrowing it at the moment, but will get it back in the next couple of days and will put up a photo of it in situ (might even put up a short video of it in action... )

Excellent for track days - when i wear my full face helmet I find it hard to judge gear changes from engine noise - shift l;ights help....

If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for it off Ebay? There's currently an S and an R for sale on there and would like a rough idea of price.

I payed £140 for mine. It was sent to me from the same address as the Gtech company, so i think they ebay them as a marketing technique.

if you want to know the end prices of an ebay sellers items, use ebays advanced search option, search by the seller, and tick the option 'show completed items'.... that should give you a better idea
