Why no postcode search on OEM Sat-Nav?

This has me stumped - it seems that every sat-nav system you buy these days allows you to search by postcode. However (despite the dealer in Stevenage saying it does) the Mini OEM sat-nav only allows you to speicify postcode in central london? I was hoping that the v60 update might have added this feature but it appears to not have done.

Does anyone know why BMW think this feature is not worth implementing or is this another 'Bimmers get it but Minis don't' - like time on the lower left corner?

Question

Hi Rich,

You and I have brought our cars at the same time. On the Nav paperwork it states that full UK post codes will be available on the 2006 software. I am led to beleive it is about £170.00 not cheap. Do BMW do software upgrades or do you think we would have to pay full whack.

Hi - this depends on what bit of software they are talking about. There is the OS update CD and then of course the Map DVD itself.

The OS update software *should* be free to upgrade if your car is under warantee. However, it is often quicker and less hassle to get the update cd yourself and flash your own car as many ppl seem to do. There are countless links around on how to do this.

The Map DVD is more tricky - it costs somewhere in the region of £100 and I understand there are 2 or 3 updates a year?

I recently took my sat nav from 4-1/50 to 4-1/60 which is the most current version (it came out 10 days after I took delivery!!) - you can see your version in the top right of the 'SET' screen. This had made some lovely visual differences but no change to poastcode search.

Where did you see the info about the 2006 software as I have not seen this?

I also have the 2005/2 map DVD. So, this will be the first 2006 DVD I guess...pity it's the expensive one Also a pity I didn't end up buying the car from the dealer that told me it has poastcode allready - otherwise I would argue for a free upgrade. On the plus side - not too long to wait I hope.

I agree its well annoying and will pay it no matter what. The system constantly gives me a headache as it struggles to find road names however once it knows what you want it gets you there brilliantly. I'll be arguing for a free upgrade cos the system has been so appalling and im my opinion a complete rip off without this facility!

I had Sat Nav for a month in a demo car and was NOT impressed, very poor compared, for example, with that in my in-laws XC90.
