On Board Computer

Hi

Does any one know when the on board computer was pact of the Chili pack. I am trying to buy a Mini Cooper and a dealer has one for sale on a July 03 plate but they are not sure when the on board computer was introducded.

I belive it's best to see if the wash/wipe stalk has the button on top of it to cycle through the computer options. If it's missing its unlikely to have the OBC

Good luck in your hunt.

hi. you could be looking forever for the perfect mini, we did. couldn't get the one we wanted with on board computer so we bought one ourselves & fitted it.
its really easy & alot cheaper.
we bought the stalk off ebay for £15 & the wiring from bmw for £14.
got the wiring diagram off this site.
we seem to think they were introduced as standard from 53 reg onwards.
hope this has been helpful & good luck finding the right one for you.

The OBC was standard from November build onwards - mine came without it Sept 03 - a friend purchased his March 04 and it was standard fitting then.

My June '03 Cooper came without (but with a Chili pack) but I retrofitted it for under £40

My MC is a Dec 03 build, this was the introduction of a minor facelift. I had to pay extra for my car after placing order. Chili pack price went up and OBC added as part of kit.

how did you go about it mate? and was that price achieved by buying second hand parts from ebay ?

very interested in getting it retrofitted, but as its a new car to me I am reluctant to go messing with the electronics (I am relatively confident with ICE though - wiring systems with several amps and power caps etc). Mainly want to avoid making the warranty void

Dave

Hi Dave

Yes, I used a stalk from eBay (£20) although it was brand new, never used. The other £20 was the wiring harness from MINI.

Took me about 3 hours on and off to do the job properly, triple checking everything and being very careful. I followed the official installation PDF from here as well as some information found via MINI2 about removing the dash top and speedo.

Let me know if you need any more info,

Martin

Question

thanks for the reply martin,

my only other question concern my speedo. my MCS is a Jan 03 plate so i believe it comes with the earlier model speedo (bc01 or similar model no.) and i think I am right in saying you need the newer model (bc02) to show the current speed on the digi display?

thanks for your help

Dave

Mine doesn't show current (instantaneous) speed as it is a June 2003 car, before the facelift. I think the body control module (BC1) was changed as part of the facelift to provide the instantaneous speed and fuel consumption readouts on the OBC.
