Speedometer Ring Removal

I want to paint my rings so I was wondering if anyone had removed the speedo ring? If so can you share some tips on how to do this? I know the vent rings twist off. Thought I heard that the speedo ring is glued on. If so is there a good way it be taken off with out breaking it?

Thanks in advance

Steve

I have the sat nav in the centre, and it simply pulls off, easiest way to do this is to pull the centre part of the dash up and out this brings the ring surround partly off then you can take the rest of it off easily.

would imagine it is similar for those MINI's with the speedo in the middle, but don't blame me if you break it

The Bentley manual shows how to take off the entire center dash piece, this might be the only to do it and it shouldn’t be hard to do but someone may have found a better way. I would never blame anyone but the guy doing the work (me) should breakage occur.

Some pull off with a bit of force, some need the centre of the dash pulling up as Rakey says...

Again don't blame us if you break it! If it doesn't come off by pulling:-

Remove the 2 screws in the top of the dash at the left and right of the dimmer/hazard buttons respectively (left and right of the speedo), and remove (if there) the first screw on the underside of the dash just to the top left of the left downtube.

This should allow you to hinge the dash up from the bottom, and press the speedo ring out from the back.

My experience with r/r'ing the standard speedo trim ring is as follows. I removed the two screws at the top sides, which I later found to be totally unnecessary. I then wrapped a thin wide screwdriver with a clean rag (one layer, just to keep from scratching the plastic) and inserted it under the bottom edge of the trim. I levered against the dash trim (pushed down on handle so tip pushed up) and slowly increased pressure. After less than 10 seconds the ring just popped off. There were two small dabs of glue (rubber cement) either side of the double prongs at the bottom. Installing the new ring was just cleaning any residue glue from the speedo (no need to reglue so far), inserting the double prongs (for alignment) and snapping in the remainder of the ring.

Much of my success was the result of good advice from others on this and other threads and other sites.

Now if I could find the trick to replacing the roll-over bar covers, I'd be just about finished with dechroming. But that's for another thread.

In my experience you have to pull the front panel off - the ring is clipped in, but then secured with glue.

Weegit- the roll over parts can be removed after disassembling the box with the toggle switches. there are quite a few parts but you can take it apart quite easily.. what are you doing with all that chrome? I need to buy some!

I'm talking about the roll-over bars behind the rear seats on my convertible, not the toggle switch dividers, but thanks anyway. As to the chrome bits, all are already spoken for, except the above mentioned roll-over bar covers and the handbrake handle, which I managed to break when removing it. I bought all the pieces in anthracite from local dealers for not too much - although it did take a couple of months for all the pieces to arrive. For the tach trim, I found someone willing to trade their silver trim - I'm in the middle of that exchange.
