DIY Help with sat nav CD

Hi,

Recently my sat nav cd unit failed, and after investigation it turned out that a small amount of gravel had got into it somehow, so a quick clean out sorted it. Unfortunately it has scratched the Mapping Data CD so that it can no longer be read (I get an IO error when trying to copy the disk) - so as a request does anyone have a Digital Road MAP GB cd they can make a backup copy of for me; I of course have an original (a 2004 edition from IGN France, NavTech) so it should not be a problem for me to use a copy. I understand it's a bit of a pain to produce so I'm offering £20 to anyone who's prepared to go to the trouble (drop me an email and I'll paypal you or send a cheque - which ever you prefer.)

As an aside, I checked with our local mini garage and damaged CD's are quite common apparently and they always suggest that people keep their original and use a backup copy in the Mini cd player - good advice, but a bit late for me now!

Have you tried using a computer to read the disc? If it can, you might be able to copy it yourself. PC's tend to have better units in them that can compensate for scratches.

Hi,

Basically the CD player for the Sat Nav stopped reading the disk (please insert CD message) so I did try copying it on my PC, but it I/O errors about 1/5 of the way through the copy; I tried copying several times, but it always failed - basically the CD is a gonner

Is the problem that the disc is scratched? Scratched discs can often be repaired by polishing them. For more information, Google on the topic of repairing scratched CDs. Here is one example: http://www.infopackets.com/channels/...isc_part_2.htm

It looks an interesting possibility - I'll try polishing and let you know how it goes.
