The two spoke wheel is the older wheel and the Cooper S standard and the bottom three spoke wheel is the Cooper S upgrade (introduced to Chilli Pack in late 2003).... i have a 2004 Cooper S with Chilli with the three spoke and its by far the nicer wheel in my opinion....absolutely no contest!....(Correct me if i'm wrong anyone!)
Don't think one is 'better' than the other, it's very much down to personal preference, and to add my 2p worth, I wouldn't change my 3 spoke for anything- in fact it was only just available when I was speccing my S, and the 2 spoke wheel was the one thing that was putting me off, so it's introduction was perfect timing for me...
When my MC with chilli pack arrived just after Christmas 03 it had a 3 spoke wheel. Even my dealer was surprised as it was the first one they had seen and did not know it existed. Far better than 2 spoke. I think the spokes are too thick on 2 spoke.
I did just try speccin' a MINI One Seven on mini.co.uk, and to have the Sports steering wheel (3 spoke) you have to also spec Bluetooth, MFSW and the armrest...
