ICE Help

Is there anyone running a sub + amp with the standard MINI speakers? I already have a sub + amp and cd player sitting in my garage, removed from my old car. I am thinking about fitting these you see but i am worried that it will sound crap unless i replace the standard comnponents?

Also... do you know if it would cost a lot to have the wires fitted at a dealer/Car audio business? Reason being, I cant be bothered taking the car apart to run the wires as i did in my last one because in all honesty its a ball ache

Hopefully someone out there in the land of Mini2 can help me

Yes I've run this for a while. I have an Infinity Basslink X so not strictly a sub and amp more a sub with amp

The stock speakers can produce a lot better sound than you would think (and a lot of people would lead you to believe ) especially when you use high pass filter on them and let the sub do the work.

Does your HU include HPF's?

It was acceptable in the 80's

I know a few people that have this setup and it sounds really good (better than you would think actually!) go to somehwere like halfords they have a set standard rate for fitting which i believe is around £35-40 for a stereo and a little more for an amp and sub to go in. I know our local car audio store charge a little more mainly because it is a bmw setup - think they charge £60 for a stereo, sub and amp fitting. bonus is they have mini's for their demo vehicles so they know exactly where everything is!!

i had my new headunit fitted this weekend (with 3.5" TV screen) and oh my god....how many screws and bmw sure like to hide them!!

Yeah I find the trouble with BMW and half the reason why they are so solid is a lot of areas are over engineered.

Where your Fords, Vauxhalls and Fiats of this world would use screws or clips to hold a panel on, BMW use screws AND clips.

Also they seem to have some of the most powerful clips known to man. I'm sure you could hold bridges up with them

A prime example is the rear light unit. 4 clips and a bolt and nut to hold them in. You could drop a hand grenade in the cubby hole and the lights wouldn't come out

It was acceptable in the 80's

yea, i agree there, definitly strong cars! Well you see my head unit is crap. Its a kenwood CD player with only one preout, meaninhg if i was to install this then I would not be able to run an anp + cd changer without a splitter. However idont want to use a splitter because the supply voltage to the only pre out pair is 2V. Meaning with a splitter in place the amp would only be supplied with 1V. Hence, i would have to set the gain on the amplifier to 1 (to ensure best quality) otherwise there would be a lot of distortion if i set it higher. So..to cut a long story short I need a new head unit. I would like one that has an ipod interface kit like the alpine HU but its just too expensive for me at the minute.

As for the fitting, do you know what BMW would charge? I dont want everything wiring up as I can easily do that myself I just want the stereo fitting (if i was to get a new 1) and the wires for the amplifier running through the car (ie power, earth , RCA & remote).

its easy mate did it the other day in about 2 hours, the whole thing!!

just run the wires behind the carpet under the dash the pop off the trim that runs round the door well, there is loads of room even to hide a huge guage power cable!
do a couple of wires each side and through the back seats and its done!!

its the bit where i would need a wire to go from the engine bay through to the cabin of the car. I am just a bit dubious as last tme i ran the wire through a gromet (which is what i have been advised to do on this site) I got a leak.
