Alpine CDE-9850Ri iPod Head Unit

I'm looking at buying one of these because i find the ipod controls too sensitive to use in the car.

Currently i have an my iPod connected to my Alpine CDE-9853R via an Autoleads adaptor plugged into the CD Changer socket and this allows me to retain the use of the ipod controls.

The older Alpine ipod interface was really slow, you controlled the ipod from the headunit but if you had a lot of tracks it was snail-like which is why I went for the Autoleads option because it allowed me to search more quickly using the ipod controls but now i realise they're too sensitive on our bumpy roads! AAAAAARGGGH!!

Now the new CDE-9850Ri allows me to control the ipod directly from the head unit in "Full Speed" (Alpines name for it).

In a long winded kinda way i'm asking if anyone had the CDE-9850Ri and wondered how they get along with it?

Thanks in advance guys!

ive got it, its fine, its best to put the ipod on random as long as you dont mind what comes on because i still think its a little fiddley to select a specific track, it is a good cd player, ive never had a cd in it yet cos i always just use my ipod, i recommend it

So it's not great for choosing tracks by artist/album/genre etc? That's the reason I want to swap you see!

it is no doubt brilliant but i have a really low attention span and i cant be bothered to read the manual, im sure it is easy to do, but i wouldnt recommend doing it whilst driving cos it can be a bit fiddley, (sorry if this is not much help)

I have one of the afore mentioned Alpine head units - I think it's great and find it very easy to use.

Unfortunately my standard Mini CD changer does not work with the Alpine unit but I don't see the need for it now with my iPOD.

Dittto - I have one - installed it last Monday - it deletes my Mini CD changer - but in reality I don't need it anymore. The CD player part is great - and the iPod functionality is a peach. once you learn how to use the unit - ie browse for song, artist, albums - it is very easy and above all - very very fast - nearly as quick as controlling directly from the iPod - it really is great. It also displays full title information for the track or album

I have mine controlled by an adapter to my MFSW - supplied by Mikey @ NewMiniStuff - btw - fantastic service and although was delayed in getting the parts - due to backorder of kit from supplier - Mikey's service was brilliant with everything delivered when he said it would be. I followed the installl instructions on his site - and they were completely correct to the letter and full stop. Fantastic.
I would say that it is alot easier to control using the MFSW - you can skip though tracks forward and back with ease - so then you only have to touch the H/U directy when change an album, artist or playlist - which is a breeze imo

The unit is great even with the standard speakers that I have in at the moment. - Going to be changing them for Phoenix 6.5in components in the front and 6x9's in the rear. - Cheers Sebby! Will post up pics later my H/U in my car

Great i was pleased with my excellent (albeit over-complex) CDA-9853R and i'm used to Alpine's so I know the sound will be good. Thanks for clearing the ipod control bit up! I'm happier spending my money on one now.

PS I know Mikey's the daddy but i'm ordering it from work (I run an independant motor accessory shop) but if anyone needs Mini audio you can't go wrong with newministuff.co.uk (I bought my ipod cradle from Mikey)

I have it, its good sound quality, makes me want new speakers to as the Mini ones aint up to scratch with it. I still haven't learned how to search between artists/playlists yet only search through songs within an artist or playlist. Anyone know how to do this? Looks the dogs too haha

I really want one but the illumination isn't switchable so all the buttons are blue and it only has 1 pre-out which makes it a bit inflexible when using it with external amps.

For iPod functionality it's top notch though
