My mini cooper s has sat nav and so there seems to be no way of displaying the engine temperature, ie no dial like there is on every other car I have driven.
This worries me for two reasons....
Firstly I like to warm the car up before I drive it hard.....
Secondly the engine seems to give off a very large amount of heat, when I finish driving there is always alot of heat wafting from the engine, especially if you open the bonnet, far more than on any other car.
Also when I am sitting in a traffic jam with arm resting out of the window, I can often feel large amounts of heat wafting up.
So is there any way of having the engine temp displayed via my instruments, both for everyday use and also to check that there is not an overheating problem with the car?
If your sat in traffic with your arm out the window and the engine fan is on it's perfectly normal to feel hot air wafting towards you as this is where it seems to be blown. When the fan switches off you should feel the heat disappear.
Can't help you with the display unfortunately as I don't have Nav.
Unfortunately, there isn't; this is just one of the things you lose by having the sat nav (I've got it too). I also like to let the car warm up before giving it high revs. There's a couple of ways you can ensure you do this. Firstly, give it 10 minutes; that should definitely be enough time to warm up to optimum temperature, even if it's very cold. Secondly, if you are coming to a stop on a particular journey, you can look at the idle speed and see when it is idling normally.
I wouldn't be concerned about the heat. The MINI engine bay is very tight, and this is why you feel a lot of heat escape when you open the bonnet. And regarding the hot air you can feel travelling towards you, that'll be the fans (as Root Ginger pointed out).
I hope this helps.
