Using UK TomTom in the US

Hi Guys,

I'm in the US and having trouble getting my TomTom to work over here.

It's a UK model but I've bought the US maps to use here, but the TomTom is unable to get a valid GPS signal.

Does anyone know what I need to do... change settings or something.

Thanks,
Richard.

as you've moved more than 500 miles since you last used it, the GPS almanac data will be incorrect - this is the data that tells the unit which satellites will be where at any given time. Turn it on and leave it with a clear view of the sky for about 45 minutes or more, this will then allow it to find new satellites.

And no, I dont work for TomTom, I work for a better GPS company - Garmin.

I've just got back from the US over the weekend and used a TomTom 910 while there and never once did I have any problems getting a signal - it was 4 or 5 bars all the time. However this model has the maps built in but I would've thought that wouldn't affect the GPS reception.

if fergusor's tomtom go is an older model it will have the old chip in it which takes longer to acquire a signal. sham's new 910 has an improved chip & faster acquisition

No upgrades showing on the Garmin site though? Is that the only place to purchase them?

, It didn't seem to work for Sprydle when he was in San Francisco! That's why he was so late showing up at Fort Point! He was lost!

But San Francisco can challenge even the latest navigation units.

Was in the USA in July, worked perfectly; just leave it to get a signal takes a bit longer than normal as you moved a few thousand miles I think it took around 30mins or so before it got a signal. But once you have a signal every time you use it after that it will pick up a signal in a few minutes.. just as if you was in the UK
