Canada +5v Source

Does anyone know if theres a +5v source in the dash/stereo area capible of supplying ~ 1A peak power?

Before I go grab a 12v->5v dc-dc converter just thought I'd ask. I'm trying to find a place to perma-connect my Magellen eXplorist 500 gps.

I'm sure there isn't.
It's possible some of the electronic modules have 5V internally, but that supply won't be made available externally - and 1A is the top limit for most 5V regulators anyway; they'd need a good heatsink.

I'll probably just canabalize a retail cig-adapter designed for the unit then, but what regulators are you using for your mini circuit (that looks quite cool btw).

What would you recommend for a 12v->5v @ ~1Amp -- regulator. Operating temperature range is critical because it gets both extremely cold and hot here in Edmonton.

Also, would you splice into the cig feed or is there a better 12v source at some connector that wouldnt require a splice.

TIA

The MINI circuit only draws about 20mA.

For my TomTom I used a small module which has three pins just like a 7805, but is internally a switching regulator so very low heat dissipation. I don't remember the part number now and the only similar part I've found is this, which is not identical but might work for you:
Switching voltage regulators - 7805 replacements

Was PT5101A-ND the one you used (Digikey part #)?
