Sat nav version and map upgrades I need someones help please! After reading some info on the X5 site and here, I am very keen to upgrade my sat nav to V28 and get the newer maps, preferably with the speed camera POI's. I am, however, relatively computer illiterate! Is there someone who can supply me with the discs I need ready to go or provide me with an idiots guide? I have the DVD sat nav (4th gen) in my 2003 cooper S. Thanks. |

| I just went and downloaded the v28 upgrade from the link on the X5world.com site. I downloaded the .ISO image to my Mac, burned it to a CD using Disk Utility, and installed it without difficulty. It gets a lot more information out of my 2006 DVD than the older version did, and I love the perspective view. Paul |

| Hi, With regard to burning this to CD/DVD does it have to be an "image" or just a straight forward data disc? I'm not running nero but a pre-installed "power to go" program which won't allow me to burn an image. Any thoughts much appreciated. P.s great site - loads of interesting info. |

| Hi DaFlake, Thanks very much for that. You don't need me to trouble you with my computer problems but I'm a little confused. I've burned from an image before without problems. However, V28 as it stands is saved in My Documents and when i open the burning software I cannot see V28 or browse for it. Apparently the burner is looking for a specific type of file: Image Files p2i; iso. The V28 is a .RAR file. Is this my problem? Or - either i'm being stupid or my software is not geared for this. I'd appreciate your advice. Regards dan |

, you are not being stupid. RAR is a compression utility like ZIP. the Image is actually in the RAR. So, you will need to extract it from the file. If you google RAR, you will get the RAR siteWinRAR archiver, a powerful tool to process RAR and ZIP files This site costs money but there is a trial. There is a better utility that is free and can handle many different types of compression utilities. It is called Tugzip TUGZip - The Free Archiving Utility This tool will allow you to open the RAR files and extract what is in them. Once you get it extracted, you can then burn it to a CD. I use Tugzip at home and work. Just be sure to check the boxes to activate RAR support during the install as it is optional. After that, you can use Tugzip for just about all of your archive utilities. |

Hi again DaFlake, I followed your advice and downladed TUGZIP. I managed to run the V28 (RAR file) through it and it has generated two files: V28.mdf (25,431Kb) V28.mds(1Kb) I trust that both of these must be burned to the DVD using the image burn process - is this correct? Thanks Dan |

| Download a trial of Alcohol 120% (do a google for this), install and use burn image to disk option. Look for the .mds file for the v28 and select this. Then you can burn the disc. FYI the MDF file holds the image of the disc and the MDS file is used by Alcohol 120% to access the MDF file. |

| Jonesy, DaFlake, Thanks for your advice/patience. Unfortunately, I seem unable to complete this simple task! I've done the following: Downloaded the V28.RAR file Downloaded and used Tugzip to handle the file Downloaded and installed Alcohol 120% I use the image burning option within Alcohol 120% and it initially finds the file in my docs right away. I insert the DVD into the drive and it detects that ok. However, when I press start it asks me "insert a disc into the drive". I've ejected/re-inserted and it still doesn't like it. I've tried both DVD-R and DVD-RW - but still no success. I've tried different discs and even combinations of firewall on and off. I've looked in the help section of alcohol for drive related errors or problems but they don't have a section for that. And finally - to add insult to injury - their web based help forum won't allow me to register. i checked to see if the drive is supported and it appears as though it is and besides it seems to detect and name the drive properly during startup. Two, very final questions for you guy's before I give this up as a bad job: 1, Is there any other obvious reason why Alcohol won't proceed when the media is already in the drive? 2, Failing this, is there another program for burning this file to disc? Many thanks, Desperate Dan |
